Delighted by my first listen to the CAMs
« on: 2 Jun 2025, 02:40 pm »
Before you read this, let me assure you that I'm neither drunk nor stoned after smoking several hemp cigarettes. It's the music produced by these speakers with their hemp speaker that is responsible for my excitement and deep joy.
Yet I'd just come out of 5 days of suffering with my sweetheart in an “accelerated break-in” situation in my apartment, listening day and night to break-in playlists that prevented us from sleeping and working. And then finally, at 7 a.m. on Monday, I was able to undo the pile of blankets, pillows and cardboard boxes that were suffocating my poor speakers “face to face with one in reverse phase”. I set up my two CAMs, connected them to the rest of the system (Qobuz and Idagio streaming files + MacBook Pro + Qutest DAC + Khozmo passive preamp + Audioengine N22 amp) and got them to play as many pieces of Renaissance, classical, contemporary and jazz music as possible. Anything I could get my hands on, and I've been in heaven ever since. It's magical what comes out of those little speakers. It's like an upside-down Tardis for those who know the Doctor Who series. Like the restoration of the Sistine Chapel frescoes in Rome that I admired in the 90s. The paintings are stripped back to their original vivid, saturated colors. Likewise, recorded music becomes spectacularly clear, lively, intense and explosive

I've finally understood what's meant when people say that loudspeakers transmit emotions. The composer's intentions, the emotional effect of the musical composition. Everything becomes transparent and obvious. Listening to Luciano Berio's “Folk Songs”, performed by the composer and singer Cathy Berberian, you can feel the composer's deep love for the singer. His score is a declaration of love for his beautiful singer, who expresses the many facets and mysteries of love by singing folk songs from different countries. You can also hear the deep respect he has for these popular songs, which he delicately integrates into a contemporary score with light dissonances and musical surprises.

In fact, all recorded music, whatever its date of composition, becomes contemporary because it fades behind the musical performance that the speakers recreate. For example, the Vox feminae album by the Kapsber'girls, who sing live Italian Renaissance songs in the living room of my apartment on the 16th floor of a tower block in the enormous megalopolis of São Paulo, Brazil.

Anyway, I can't thank you enough Louis for your CAMs, they're not speakers, they're a happiness machine and I get chills every time I open a streaming file. At the beginning of July, I'll be getting my Elekit TU 8200R tube amp. How can it possibly improve on this more-than-perfect system?

Congratulations!  It is amazing what the lack of a crossover enables.  This, along with the alnico magnets and Louis' overall driver design, makes CAMs/SAMs amazing!

Yes, that's exactly it. I'm expressing it awkwardly, but with these speakers so coherent, so transparent and paradoxically so luxuriant at the same time, I no longer ask myself questions about bass, treble, midrange and the recreation of sound space. I've been practicing Hifi for 40 years and it hasn't happened to me very often, with Quads ESL57, and also with Cain and Cain Abby, hence my enthusiasm.

Lolivej - Good to hear and understand your enthusiasm on a great product.

Your descriptions are on point as I own the Omega Super 5 with the RS5 driver set.  Although it's a different design, the Super 5's exhibit all that is good in the Omega line up as well.   I'm way past the ear-bleeding SPL levels and now appreciate those sonic elements Louis' products exhibit i.e. amazing transparency with killer staging and imaging.  A colorless presentation like a bowl of Häagen-Dazs in July.

Enjoy your CAMs.

@FireGuy Yes, it's difficult to describe the speakers when it's no longer relevant to divide the music into bass, midrange, treble and I'm overwhelmed by musical emotions.

I've tried to describe the effect the speakers have on me and and that's more complicated than talking about bass, treble and midrange.

I would like to discuss with the participants of the Omega forum the musical emotions that the transparent and coherent Omega speakers give them, but I realize that it is very complicated.

I think this experience is when all of the audiophile flowery descriptions become unnecessary.  Put simply, when you stop listening to the equipment and only hear the music!

Yes, we are lucky to have equipment, especially the Omega speakers and carefully chosen amplifiers, that is both very transparent and just warm enough to make us plausibly participate in a musical experience recorded on our records and audio files. For example, it's great to « enter » in New York jazz clubs in the 60s and hear not only the musicians, but also the clinking of glasses, the movement of waiters. You could almost smell the cigarette smoke that was omnipresent at that time. In summary, I of course recognize the usefulness of hi-fi equipment analyses, I have benefited from them, but I think there is a lack of exchanges on our musical experiences as lovers of rock, jazz, classical, rap and the emotions we feel then, which are nevertheless the goal of our incessant quest for hi-fi equipment.

This is great news - and congrats!  I have a pair of Super Alnico High Output XRS with integrated 8" Subs coming that should be here early next week.  I'm definitely going to try to do an accelerated break in.  What amp did you use?  I have a pair of 45 monoblocks, but I'm not sure I want to do an accelerated break in with them.  Also, how loud did you have the system playing for break in?

Good evening.
For the accelerated break-in, I'm not sure if you should use a low-power tube SET amp. I would be afraid of damaging it, but I may be wrong. There are people more competent than me in the Omega circle. I used a small 50W transistor amp, the Audioengine N22. I used a higher volume than I usually listen to, but not very loud. On the potentiometer of my Khozmo passive preamp, I went from 30 to 48, then gradually up to 54. I did the break-in from Wednesday 10:45 p.m. to Monday 7 a.m., but at night, from 10 p.m. to 7 a.m., I lowered the volume to 32 so I could sleep. Well, it's all a bit of a trial and error, but if the speakers are perhaps not completely broken in, they sound better than when I received them. I hope this will be useful to you.

I think back to what you wrote to me, FireGuy. That's exactly it. At first, we are fascinated by the high performance of the Omega speakers and listen to them at high volume, at the risk of damaging our hearing. Then we realize that at low volumes, the transparency of the speakers allows us to hear a multitude of small details, and this is another listening pleasure that highlights the dialogue between the instruments and the musical nuances. It's brilliant. I went from an average level of 32 on the potentiometer of my Kozmo passive preamp to a level of 18 without diminishing my enjoyment.

Sorry for the advertisement, it was unintentional.
