What speaker wire gauge for DVA set 500?
« on: 10 May 2025, 01:49 am »
I'm wondering what speaker wire gauge will be good and sufficient to use with the DVA set 500 for a run of about 10 - 15 feet? I have some 16 gauge ofc speaker wire and 6 ohm speakers, but the 250 wpc of the amp seems pretty high and I wonder if I need to use a heavier gauge wire?

Use 10-14 gauge.  I use bare Bluejeans cables Belden 10 gauge for my 15' runs to my Magnepans.  It is cheap and you can terminate them yourself with Bluejeans spades or Banana's or better yet, just use bare wire.

These Neotech speaker cables are on my list to try and they are inexpensive.  I have bought a few things from here-

11 gauge-  https://www.ghentaudio.com/products/s22?VariantsId=15751

9 gauge-    https://www.ghentaudio.com/products/s23?VariantsId=15760

Price is per cable and you can order them in bare wire without bananas or spades.

Neotech makes great wire.

A friend whose ear I trust is raving about the WBC ( World's Best Cables) speaker cables. This would be the 7 and 9 gauge versions. Available on Amazon in the $150 -$250 range. Being that it's Amazon no risk. Send them back if they don't pan out.

Thanks Grey, I guess I'll go with the 14 gauge since it's a pretty short run.

WBC 7AWG ultra pure OFC with Eminence Connectors?  I just looked at them and they look good.

Greyhound, those Neotech look real good too. About same price as the WBC.

the power of the amp does not require a change of speaker cables nor does it require a heavier/thicker gauge.

I would rather have heavier gauge wire.  Many, many years ago when my wife bought me my first pair of Maggies, the original MMG's.  I did not have any speaker wire available and used some 18g zip  cord until my speaker cables arrived.  The 18g wire got hot and burned the ends of the wire.  I removed the wire as I did not want to start a fire.

Thanks Grey, I guess I'll go with the 14 gauge since it's a pretty short run.

I've consistently found 10-gauge and thicker to sound better, and I've always had short runs of cable (5-7 feet).

Given the modest costs of Blue Jeans or WBC cables, I would try the thicker (10 or smaller wire gauge) cables.

The engineers from Belden cables have put out a series of white papers on the measurements of audio transmission in cables:https://iconoclastcable.com/story/design.htm

They found that 10 AWG was optimal, and their measurements also showed that achieving an effectively 10-gauge cable was best done by controlling the geometry of individual strands precisely, the very thin (24 gauge) strands adding up to 10 gauge: https://iconoclastcable.com/story/speaker.pdf

Thanks Grey, I guess I'll go with the 14 gauge since it's a pretty short run.

In my setup, a single run of Kimber Kable 4VS attenuated the bass. The 4VS has an aggregate wire size of 13 AWG, a double run has an aggregate wire size of 10 AWG, which is the sweet spot for the Salk Sound HT2-TLs. My test recording was "Temple Caves" from Mickey Hart's Planet Drum. A single run of Kimber has pretty good bass, a double run made the single pane glazed windows in my previous house rattle.

I demoed some Zenwave 14 gauge Neotech EC-UPOCC speaker cables ($$$$). They sounded great, the Zenwave are slightly clearer than the Kimber but Zenwave cables are 14 gauge and still attenuate the bass so I kept the Kimber. The difference between the two cable was too subtle to spend the big bucks but the listening experience was educational.

Our audio club auditioned the new Hapa Torsion 14 gauge UPOCC hand polished Copper and Torsion 15 gauge UPOCC Nano-polished Silver in two different systems. Eric took the Hapa cables home and agreed a single run of either cable attenuated the bass. Each of us came to this same conclusion separately and while listening to the Hapa speaker cable in our own systems. Eric uses the 8 gauge speaker cable from GR Research. GR Research speaker cables are similar to Kimber Kable and cost less.

The Hapa speaker cables are a lot better sounding than the Kimber but I would need a double run and have no idea what that would cost. The difference in sound between the Copper and Silver cables was not subtle either.

Read my review about Hapa Torsion speaker cable and bi-wiring using both the Torsion Copper and Silver cable in a hybrid lash up.

The absolute best I have ever heard - Hapa Torsion Copper and Silver bi-wired, I always leave the Cardas jumpers in place

If your speakers don't have strong output below 60 Hz or you use a sub then the wire gauge may not make any difference and 13 AWG to 15 AWG may work just fine.

he has 16 gauge cables already..that's fine....
