volume level q for Transcendence 10 tube preamp
« on: 24 Apr 2025, 03:28 pm »
I have a small problem. The remote volume control with my setup does not provide the degree of fine adjustment I prefer. I'd like to have about .5x the +/- in gain for every push of the +/- on the remote. Small problem, yes.
I am happy with the overall sound do I am not in the market for different equipment.
Any suggestions?

The input levels for phono/cd/streaming are all different but but I think the degree of volume adjustment via remote is about the same. FWIW w/ phono or cd, the volume knob stays around the 9 o'clock position unless I get rowdy and push it up to 10.  Here's the setup.
Dynavector 10x5 (MC) retipped by Soundsmith via Thorens TD 126
Arcam CD 72
Van Alstine Transcendence 10 tube preamp,
Van Alstine solid state Synergy 240 (120 wpc),
Tannoy DC 4000 (rated efficiency of ~92)

I have used the low gain switch on the pre-amp and the output is lowered but there is no change in what I hear when using the remote.  (And is there a simple explanation for the curious for how the gain reduction is achieved.  I don't hear any change in sound profile other than volume, so that's good.)

Yes, I know it is good for me to get my posterior out of the chair and directly adjust.

Thanks all, Jay

There's no practical way to reduce the approximately 4 degrees of rotation that happens when making pulsed changes. Once things are moving, you should have precise, continuous control.
