Grado Sonata/Master on WT Amadeus hum
« on: 20 Apr 2025, 05:55 pm »
I have Grado Sonata & Master Series 3 high outputs linstalled on my WT Amedaus.
Has anyone been able to reduce/eliminate the loud hum. I’ve used the supplied ground cable from phono leads ground tab to the power input ground. This reduces the hum quite a bit, but still present. It’s noisy even with the turntable motor stationary.
No noise/hum with Denon’s, Dynavector in same setup. When I install either Grado on VPI TNT, no noise.
Am I missing something with the Amedaus ?; or it’s just the Grado being extremely susceptible to environment?
Thx

Grados can be prone to hum. If you Google "Grado cartridges" hum is the most searched term in conjunction with that search. Finding phono stages that get the best from them can also be a challenge in my experience. I gave up on them long ago, just too fussy.  If your other cartridges are fine it seems reasonable to assume that it's incompatible with the Amadeus.

I had a Grado Ref Sonata that hummed on my restored Thorens(AC motor)
When I first purchased the Amadeus I used the Grado  and changed the stock wallwart for a Radio Shack model that some on this forum recommended with elimination of a small amt of hum. I was happy with this combination but eventually changed to Dynavector20X2L and now have the BPS power supply. It’s a nice setup but I’ve gotten curious about the Kauri fromWTL.

Recently,I changed the cartridge to Lyra,I got noise and hum too.so I try to move the phono away from the turntable, but not succeed, so I try to change the phono cable, after buying a new phono cable, hum is almost gone.
My new phono cable is bought from TWL Spirit ll, it's really quiet phono cable and affordable.
It just my opinion

Did you connect the wire provided between the ground lug and the psu connection?

Oh yes, attached that wire from ground lug to psu ground. Without that wire, not even listenable.
Same cartridge dead quiet on VPI.
Thx

Maybe I missed it in an earlier statement, but are you using the stock supplied wall wart PS?

Yes, using Well Tempered wall wart.

As  already suggested, try a better power supply. Maybe an iFi wall wart that fits the voltage specs. Found on Amazon, so returnable if it doesn't pan out.  A different phono cable  (already mentioned as well) is a long shot possibility. Either way you may have just run up against a compatibility issue with the Grado cart.
