  • I reject your music, and substitute my own.
Now, it's your turn.

Are there any genre/bands/songs you like but are ashamed to confess to?

Hmmm... witness stand or psychiatrist couch?

Gothic music is my absolute favourite genre and aside from posting on Audio Circle I do not bring this "subject" up in polite conversation. A little reminiscent of one time while out on a walk with Hector, my beloved boxer. I noticed an individual's garage full of vintage, metal working machines and having a profound weakness for "heavy metal" I had to walk up and say "hello." To make a long story short, we eventually became friends and a little while after this, his wife confided in me that they did not know what to expect when they saw me walking up the driveway

Usually my listening habits are 70s/80s pop music (music intended/accepted by a wide audience) during the day and working around the house while Gothic Music is for my very late night, sit in the chair listening enjoyment - something special about Gothic music and candles after midnight.

Favourite bands? Only to name a few that come quickly to mind - Dead Can Dance, Christian Death, The Sisters Of Mercy, Bauhaus, Joy Division, Cradle Of Filth, Diary Of Dreams, Sopor Aeternus & The Ensemble Of Shadows and Lacrimas Profundere. For Pop music - Rush, Styx, Kansas, Boston, America and so on.

As for favourite songs - Rozz Williams' "Flowers" (can't help but thinking that this was a harbinger of events to come), Portishead "Roads" (also used in Sophie Lancaster/Rob Maltby tribute short film - https://youtu.be/qW2ve6_BkRA), Dead Can Dance "The Host Of Seraphim" the voice of Lisa Gerrard is truly angelic, The Last Dance "This Tragedy," Sopor Aeternus & The Ensemble Of Shadows "In der Palästra," Emilie Autumn "Mad Girl," Cradle Of Filth "Nymphetamine" and Type O Negative "Love You To Death." On the pop side - Rush "A Passage To Bangkok," Boston "More Than A Feeling," Styx "Man In The Wilderness," and America "A Horse With No Name."

Just like many like minded individuals here, music is my personal time travel machine which permits me to revisit, however briefly, by gone days. We'll save "mood enhancement" for another conversation 8)

Be well...

Now that is an awesome question.

I was not a fan of country music songs/artists until I heard Johnny Cash doing a cover of Trent Reznor's "Hurt." Cash did an awesome job and Trent complimented Cash on his rendition. Eventually, I purchased a few albums by Johnny Cash - I do not listen to them often, more of once in a blue moon type thing. Other than that I'm slowly gaining an appreciation for Blues - If I remember correctly, it started by listening to Gary Moore. Interestingly enough, I have noticed that it's not the song I have enjoyed over the years fall out of favour, but the artists for varied reasons - it's also the same concept for me when it comes to movies.

Digital - be it CDs or digital downloads. I do own a couple of hundred or so records but have no turntable to date.

Interestingly enough, I have arrived at an ironic juncture in audio. Over the years, I have truly become the "weak link" in my audio system as my hearing is not what it once was. Flightlines and working underground have taken their toll :duh:

Many years ago, I purchased a phono stage and started searching for a turntable and was leaning towards Acoustic Signature. Then the most dreaded issue of putting too much thought into the purchase compounded itself and caused a loss of interest at times resulting in my turntable acquisition being put on the back burner. One day I came across a photo of a VPI Signature Prime in Rosewood and this added to my purchase dilemma - a simply gorgeous turntable, but is it a wise purchase as I could not enjoy its total performance? We'll leave vanity out of the equation for now

Recently I have been considering going the route of purchasing a vintage Denon or JVC turntable where the nostalgic value would be much more important for myself as I know I could not hear the difference between the different turntables ( I can no longer tell the difference between my SACD and standard CDs now). I might even take it a step further and put together a vintage audio system - locating a Marantz receiver I once owned and consider a vintage pair of JBLs (my current system has JBLs). After all, many of us consider music to be a time machine which enables us to briefly revisit by-gone days.

Just curious if any of my AudioCircle friends have also experienced this and I would certainly enjoy hearing your views with respect to this subject.

Am I alone?
