Philips AD5056
« on: 4 Apr 2025, 02:47 pm »
I have this pair of vintage Philips speakers that are free to me.
I looked them up and they are circa 1969.
I managed to get the back off one of them. I unscrewed it then had to use force to break the seal.
The photos are what I found inside.
The speaker cord is wired directly to the crossover.
I could not remove the 10” driver, it is hard sealed to the baffle.
I could remove the smaller drivers but the white plastic domes are hard sealed to the driver frames.
The front grill does not want to come off.
They are quite heavy, the baffle is 1” thick.
Everything seems to be intact although I have not hooked them up.
My question is; assuming they play what would you do with them?
I’m thinking of adding binding posts and new wire to the crossover.
The cross over could also be reworked but I have no idea where to start on that.

What would I do with them? I would put them on the curb with a sign that says "Free Speakers" and see how long they last. I do that with all my old electronics, they rarely last longer than a day and easier (and more fun) than dropping stuff off at the thrift store. A while ago I was carrying a broken TV to the dumpster and my neighbor asked if I was throwing it away, I told him it didn't work but he took it anyway.

The first step would probably be to hook them up. I would be surprised if the speakers sounded great and didn't buzz or rattle.

Philips Alnico woofers always sound good.

Sought after i expect. I have 4 10” hanging around.

That particular version of the AD50xx is unfamilar to me.

I have never seen a complete Philips speaker like these, especially in original condition, its a very rare bird.

Rare indeed -

... speakers with the bass reflex around the bass diaphragms which are also made of styrofoam!

Hook them up and see what they can do.  But I've got to say that WGH is probably right.  Most old speakers haven't aged well.  A few years ago I found a pair of old Fraziers that were my first upgrade speaker.  At the time, they were so much better than the Panasonic all in one set I was listening to. They had a torn surround, so I bought them cheap enough.   But making the repair, and after a bit more work on them, I took them back to the shop where I bought them and traded them in for store credit.
And yet I have a pair of old Altec Flamencos that have excellent vocals and test incredibly flat (especially after have Danny Richie design new crossovers).  You'll just have to hear them and decide.

I'll hook them up and report back.
It's funny you should say drop them at the curb. How do you think I got them?
If they buzz and rattle they'll go back to the curb.
I thought those vintage drivers were prized. I don't know if the 10" is Alnico.
What the heck is that hard styrofoam behind the cone on the 10"?

I hooked up the speakers and unfortunately one of the 10" drivers is blown. Buzz and crackle.
Back to the curb!
Unless someone in Toronto wants them. Speak now.
