"The military dictatorship in Brazil was established on April 1, 1964, after a coup d'état by the Brazilian Armed Forces, with support from the United States government, against president João Goulart. The Brazilian dictatorship lasted for 21 years, until 15 March 1985.
"The dictatorship reached the height of its popularity in the early 1970s with the so-called "Brazilian Miracle", even as the regime censored all media, and tortured, killed and exiled dissidents."1

"I'm Still Here" takes place in early 1970's during these tumultuous times. The film follows Rubens Paiva and his wife Eunice and their five children who live near Leblon beach, a neighborhood South of Rio de Janeiro. The Paiva's have an idyllic life with friends and family with the beach close by. This all changes when Rubens is taken in for questioning by the military.

"I'm Still Here"  is directed by Walter Moreira Salles Júnior and stars Fernanda Pinheiro Monteiro Torres and Selton Figueiredo Mello. The film is based on Marcelo Rubens Paiva's 2015 memoir of the same name that follows Eunice Paiva, his mother and activist coping with the forced disappearance of her husband, the dissident politician Rubens Paiva, during the military dictatorship in Brazil. 2

The film is a loving portrait of a powerful woman raising a family during a dictatorship. This is a true story.

"I'm Still Here" won Best International Feature Film Oscar at the 97th Academy Awards becoming the first-ever Brazilian produced film to win an Academy Award. Fernanda Torres was nominated for Best Actress and the film was nominated for Best Picture.
