Bryston BDA3 Firmware - u2020.07a
« on: 11 Mar 2025, 09:27 pm »
My bryston bda3 is currently at firmware u2020.07a . I beleive there is a newer firmware file for this bda3 . Do i just go the latest release or do i have to update the firmware in 2 steps ? Firmware changelog would be nice . Thanks Darrell

Hi Darrell!

Is there a particular reason you want to update the F/W? Typically, this would be done if the device had a problem. Because Bryston DACs are pretty straightforward and don't offer much in terms of selectable filters that could be added with F/W updates, I see no reason in updating it. Also, there is risk involved - if there's a sudden power outage or the cable is disconnected during an update, the device would be due for a repair.

FWIW.

Cheers,
Antun

Usually a firmware update is to add features or fix bugs . Would probably want to see the firmware changelog first and then decide whether or not to update the firmware . Darrell

I was stupid and went ahead with the update. Now my BDP3(2016) doesn’t appear in ”my bryston”. The lesson is: If it ain’t broke: Don’t fix it! What to do : (

I still have the 2018 build on mine but I don't see it on the Bryston downloads page anymore, even though it was confirmed to be the "correct" version for many years.  The 2020 build used to be there as well, but we were told not to use it unless instructed by Bryston.

There are however a couple 2021 builds and a 2022 build in "latest" now:

Which version did you install that bricked the unit?

There are no release notes so this is very dangerous.  I am thinking these builds are actually intended for the BDA 3.14 since the exact same files are in here: https://support.bryston.com/downloads/BDA-3.14/BDA3.14%20Firmware/

Adam tried his best, but couldn’t fix it online. It seems I have to ship the BDA to Canada (from Sweden) so Bryston can reprogram it. I can still use it, so I’ll probably wait a while, but I’ll do it. Don’t try this at home : (
