Open Baffle Woofers
« on: 8 Mar 2025, 01:24 pm »
I am going to build a pair of Open Baffle speakers . My tweeter is ESS Heil AMT 1 . I am trying to deicide on which one of these 5 woofers too use . SB Audience Bianco -150b350 , Goldwood 215/4 and 8 , Goldwood GW 212/8 and  Lii Song W15 . Also a single woofer or double . If anyone has used these send me a comment on using them . Please do not send me opions if you have not personally used any of these speakers . The Goldwood specs. look great and the price is the best. Thanks for any info.

Not opinion but on specs of both drivers. The Qts wildly different on each. The SB is 0.63 and the GW 1.4! This is the area where I would concentrate on finding more info on. Bass quality & transient response will both be affected. The SB although called out as suitable for free air has a Qts in the range for sealed box use (0.4 - 0.7). Since SB calls the woofer out as being good for open baffle you may want to contact them for application info. Ideally they have links to online uses of the woofer that way. Also note the review they ref uses 4 woofers. It's an interesting dance to dial it in. Some good comments on how system Q was developed on the Carver Amazings by the designer here -

Good Luck!

I thought you like high Qts drivers?
Why not use a driver with a Qts of 1.58?

voice coil
Each is 8 ohms so in parallel they present a 4 ohm load.
FRM is over 100 years old and only likes 16 ohm speakers.
You live in the modern world where 4 ohms is usually acceptable.

Small tube amps with 16 ohms FR drivers made tubes lasts much longer than 4/8 ohms.

1. I don't believe your propaganda (too much evidence that it is wrong).
2. Who said the OP is using a tube amplifier to drive the woofers?
