Classic Stands - Bully
« on: 4 Mar 2025, 04:42 pm »
Hi,

I ordered a flatpack for the Bully speaker stands.

Does anyone have advice on finishing these?
Is it advisable to use spikes with the speaker stands?
I have seen some different foam, rubber, or damping materials you can glue on the top surface of the stands. Does anyone have experience with these products?
I also noticed in the GR-Research pictures that the stands might have veneer on them?

Thank you!

Rob

Rob,
I purchased Herbies Audio Labs big fat dots with adhesive on one side. Attached them to the top of the stands. I put them at all four furthest corners. They work well!

For stands, I'd match the finish of the main speakers.

I don't think I have the money or motivation to treat my stands the same as the speakers. I chose some pretty spendy veneer and I know it will take a considerable amount of work to pull it off.

I like how the stands look when painted black. I'm not against that treatment. The GR-Research pictures look like they have some type of wood veneer. In that case, I might stain them.

The main ideas I'm trying to decide upon is the proper treatment of the top and bottom of the stands. The speakers will be wood veneer, so I don't want to scratch that when sitting on the stands. The flooring in our home is wood, so I don't want to scratch that either.

I'm not sure if I need to consider if the speakers could slide off the stands.

Simple basic black finishing is pretty easy with aerosol primers and trim black. Personal preference for something basic is Spraymax 3680405 black primer and 3680101 gloss trim black. (3680102 satin and 3680103 for matte). Second best option would be SEM aerosols of 42003 black primer and 49153 gloss trim black (49143 for satin or 49133 for matte).

These aren't fancy cans equal to what I'd recommend for long term on your speakers, but they'll work well enough and look clean on your bases without too much trouble.

As for protecting bases and speakers and floors, you could look at herbies dots, go the isoacoustic orea pods route, or even just some modeling clay to keep speaker from sliding on the bases. As for bases to floor, maybe some furniture dots for cheap or Gaia pods? You won't want double isolation devices used, but isolating at the floor or at the speaker is not a bad idea.

Ok, so this is what I came up with for an idea.

I will be rounding over the top and sides of my Bully speakers by 1/2". I will apply DuraTex to the front of the speaker and over rounded part. From there the rest of the speaker will be wood veneer.

So, for the stands, I'm thinking of using quality cabinet paint and DuraTex. The vertical boards will match the veneer color which should be a reddish orange. The tops and bottoms I'll coat with DuraTex. Using two tones this way to tie in the speakers would make it all look like a custom matching set.

I suppose this idea is subject to change. My mind is continually grinding on this stuff while I wait for the wood to be shipped.   :)

@NIGHTFALL1970,

Which size of Herbies Audio Labs Big Fat Dots will work with the Bully? Its footprint is 14" x 14".

Thank you!

Rob

I think they were an inch. I ‘ll check when I get home. 8 of them were about $106.

I ended up buying the X-Large Dots. They are 1.5" in diameter and 1/4" thick for $130. Hobbs recommends the isolation for the speakers/stands.

Crawdaddy,
Those look amazing! I have never seen Bully’s in veneer before. I thought about it, but went with Duratex and glad I did. I have gouged them up a few times and putting a little Duratex on them you would never know. If I were to gouge up veneer, my eyes would always be drawn to it.
