Tube Sockets
« on: 17 Feb 2025, 07:13 pm »
Hello.

I am need of replacing a pair of tube sockets for 6922 tubes.  So, I am in the market for a pair.  Never had to buy them before.  So, not understanding what to look out for.

I found this cheap one:  https://tinyurl.com/vigenn

And, this pricier one: https://tinyurl.com/yxwnsbbk

Do they make any diff?

Thanks.

Belton 9-pin

These are the ones I just picked up for an amp build. The basics will work, but you don't get rid of the full audiophile paranoia til you go above and beyond. The idea best I can tell is that microphonic tubes can sound different with ceramic vs different socket material if they were to catch some extra vibrations. Also looking at the metals used in the pins will make the most difference. I wish I could have found pure copper pins, but best I could find were gold coated bronze. Gold is better conductor than bronze, so I'd suggest a splurge there. Also tight fit pin holes is actually a good thing. Most DIY forums kept recommending these so I decided to give it a go.

Other thing you'll need to check is if they go to a PCB mount or point to point wiring surface mount.

The main difference between the two you linked is the less expensive ones (Amazon) are PCB mount and the more expensive ones (eBay) are chassis mount.  The common thread is they are both ceramic with gold plated contacts which is nice.

What is the project?

Oops!  I'm late.  Also I was wrong they are not both ceramic, the Amazon ones are and the eBay ones are teflon.  I have never had any gear with teflon sockets.

Always use Teflon sockets for small tubes.
They offer better sound, decrease microphonics, if there is it in the tube, they really worth the price.

Learn something new everyday.  I searched this topic and found several forum threads supporting this.  More than one DIYer find a positive result when a ceramic socket is replaced by a teflon one.
