Nosferatu (2024) - a Robert Eggers horror classic

Director Robert Eggers re-imagines the original 1922 silent film "Nosferatu: A Symphony of Horror." Eggers vision expands on the original story without changing the plot, this version faithfully follows the original film almost beat for beat with satisfying results.

Nosferatu stars Nicholas Hoult as the ill fated solicitor Thomas Hutter who travels from Wisborg, Germany to Transylvania to finalize a real estate purchase with Count Orlok (Bill Skarsgard). The Count also has his eye on Hutter's wife Ellen played by Lilly-Rose Depp. Willem Dafoe plays Professor Albin Eberhart Von Franz who figures out the Count's secret.

Robert Eggers' films use of only natural lighting, either daylight, moonlight, or candlelight without any CGI. Count Orlock's castle is an authentic decaying Romanian castle. Nosferatu is as dark and moody as the original 1922 film with many scenes in black and white.

Nosferatu pays homage to the original film in many of the scenes, it is fun comparing the two films.

I suggest watching both films, especially if you are a film buff. I recommend getting a restored and remastered colorized DVD version because the picture quality and orchestration is much better. The 1922 F.W. Murnau film "Nosferatu: A Symphony of Horror" can also be watched for free on YouTube because the copyright has expired. Most people have only seen the black and white 1922 Nosferatu but those were inferior copies. The colorized version was what was shown in theaters in 1922.

Nosferatu is rated R for rats, nudity, blood, gore, sucking and crunching.

Mr.WGH, as I much as I can't wait to see this latest masterpiece of "Nosferatu", I was wondering, if you have ever seen Werner Herzog's version of "Nosferatu the Vampyre", from 1979.I was just 15 year youngster, when I saw it and I absolutely loved it.I had to sneak into the movie theater, in order to watch it, it was 'R' rated movie.

I probably have seen it but that was so long ago. The film should probably be next on my list.

I wouldn't mind watching it again, too.I have always preferred vampire flick over werewolf.
It looks, YouTube has it for free...

I loved it. The way it was filmed was so gloomy, shades of grey, browns among muted colors gave it a dreery, dank, hopeless feeling. Acting was great and the movie moved along like a percolator to its climatic end. I will buy the dvd.

Agree with most everything -- the movie was gripping and the foreboding was everywhere, forcing the audience to wear the gloom like a blanket. Only one complaint from me: Willem Dafoe's character/acting was a bad joke. His performance was so cartoonish that it nearly ruined the last half of the movie for me -- an utter buffoon character. And I say this as a big Dafoe fan......but this was NOT his finest hour. The only blemish (for me) on a wonderful remake.

Once in a while the NYTimes website has "Anatomy of a Scene" narrated by the director. Robert Eggers narrates the one-shot scene where Thomas Hutter enters a Transylvanian village surrounded by musicians and dancers.

Two more Robert Eggers narration videos:

‘The Northman’ | Anatomy of a Scene - another long, unbroken take in black and white

‘The Lighthouse’ | Anatomy of a Scene - Eggers and team build a working 70' lighthouse where Willem Dafoe and Robert Pattinson try to stay sane. Another black and white film that has true black in many scenes.

The Critical Drinker recommends.

I saw the 4k remaster of the original on youtube and it is really worth checking out as well.
