Headphone Only Magic

I was listening the to the rig last night and it just wasn’t happening.  Everything just sounded blah so I put on a classic favorite that I go to when I need a lift - Yes’s “Awaken” from “Going For The One”.  Ten minutes in and it was just as blah.  So maybe it’s just me being blah.
Then I remembered the nights in my teens when I’d come home after an evening of “enlightenment” and listen to side 2 through headphones.  I’ve always loved Yes for the intimacy and intricacy of what I thought at the time as symphonic rock but consider “Wondrous Stories” and “Awaken” in particular as the band’s high water mark.
Slip the headphones on and the magic was (mostly) back.  It seems to me that these songs, and maybe others, are just meant to be listened to with cans.  My preference is speakers but last night has me thinking I should keep the cans handy by getting a nice headphone stand instead of putting them away.
What are your cans only tunes and why?

Yes, exactly.  I love my dedicated room stereo as well as my Hifiman HE400i headphones with a dongle DAC.  The headphones are great for YouTube surfing, listening to Elizabeth's The Charismatic Voice podcast, or listening to Amazon Music tracks.  Except for a VPI display at CAF I've never listened to an LP through headphones.  Not sure how I'd react to surface noise or, selected diety forbid, pops and clicks, over headphones.  There was a time years ago when I had to sell off or store my big rig stereo and had only headphones for listening.  I think I had about six different headphones back then.  Specific tracks?  Nah, any good music works, but I'm gonna queue up Awaken and Wonderous Stories later today.

Early B.

I recently "discovered" headphones, and now I listen via headphones far more than my 2-channel system. I'm considering re-prioritizing my system in favor of a headphone rig.

I've been listening with headphones a lot in the last 2 years and the big rig is lying dormant, although it kicks ass.
So I've been listening with my Earbuds or Custom Studio headphones on either my PC or Smartphone. Both sound great but I prefer the Smartphone because I have the EQ set to my preference and I'm just using Tone Control on the PC.
I'm Streaming mainly with Amazon which I understand is lossless so sound quality is excellent but it is still recording dependent as to how good a song is going to sound. Also Stream videos with Youtube which is good but I don't think its as good as Streaming with Amazon.
With the outside temperature below -30 it's especially nice to cozy up with a blanket while lying in bed with my Earbuds. 8)

My turntable has been in semi retirement for a long time.  I sure all that noise was there at the time but it’s not part of the sound track in my memory

The more I struggle with the system and come to terms with hearing limitations the more I wonder about doing basically the same - sell off a couple of unused bits and use the last of the dwindling budget on some nice cans and a headphone amp.  The speaker system sounds good when it sounds good so maybe it’s time to say good enough is good enough.

Isn’t in nice when it just doesn’t take a lot to be able to enjoy the music!

Do hearing aids need to be removed while using headphones? My hearing is moving towards needing enhancement with hearing aids.

I’ve read of some going to great lengths to get their hearing aids tuned.  I never even tried and never listen with them in.  Mine only amplify to 8kHz and I had no interest in having something else to fuss with.
I have a Lokius in the system that will never fully compensate but does a good job of adding back some of what’s been missing.

About a year ago I purchased A Woo Audio WA2 and the Sennheiser HD800S headphone.. At that time I had a Chord Qutest Dac listening to music from my iMac, it sounded awesome.. Shortly after I got back into my 2 channel system and wound up selling the Chord because of lack of use. I recently setup the WA2 and Sennheiser's again but needed a Dac.. I found a used Denafrips Ares 15th dac and it's been game on.. it's certainly an excellent sounding combo. My source is a Mac Mini and my musical taste is all over the place.. thats always been a constant.. I'm having a blast, nothing blah about it so far.
