CD Equipment question, nit sure where to ask.
« on: 9 Feb 2025, 11:58 pm »
Forgive me if this is the wrong forum, there doesn't seem to be one for regular CDs.

I'm looking for a device that can function :

1)  as a normal player (pop in a CD, press play, sound comes out of a digital spdif or L/R analog), without the need for a computer

2)  also has the option of connecting it to a computer through USB to rip a CD.

Right now I use 2 pieces of equipment, would be nice to consolidate them.

I don't know your budget but this CDP has USB in for a computer to use it as a DAC.

This Cambridge Audio is a great sounding CDP with USB in to use it as a DAC as well.  I owned the original 851c and it sounded very good.

Thanks!

It looks like those models use their usb b input as an input only.  Hook up your computer, send the digital signal via usb to the usb b input, and the device uses its dac.

I'm looking for something that will take control of the player to rip music off of it.  Like a $20 external usb drive.  But those cheap external drives can not function as a stand alone player.

I dont have any direct experience related to CD transports/ players that can communicate with a computer like a traditional cd drive.  I've burned and ripped many cd's but allways with a $25 to $30 SATA drive, which may still be the best or easiest option for ripping.

Here's a couple that I believe can connect to a computer to rip cd's
Shanling CR60.  -$300
Fiio DM13.  -$140
Cm cda-300b. -$225

This one is a little different.  I think it rips CD to the cloud with is own software,  you them download to your computer.
Brennan Helix $249

Not certain if this one can rip or output to computer
Moondrop discdream 2. -$180
Teac Cd-rw890. -$250?

I think those rip it to a usb stick or internally, which can then be transferred to a computer if I understand.  Nit quite what I'm looking for.

I have some old pc cd-rom drives that are excellent rippers may be able to work.  I think controllers can fe bought on ebay.  Best case scenario is it functions as needs but looks horrible since I have no machines skills to build a chassis.

You could use this stack of a mini PC plus external DVD drive and configure Windows to auto-play a music CD upon insertion into the drive.

The headphone jack on the mini PC will give you L/R analog output or you could use a USB port on the mini PC to connect to a SPDIF convertor such as this one: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0BLYVZCV5
