George Wright AU-30 amps - need help
« on: 26 Jan 2025, 08:14 pm »
Hi All,

I have a pair of George Wright AU-30 monoblock amps.  These use 300B push-pull to make 30 watts per channel.

The problem is that the power transformer gets uncomfortably hot after about 30 minutes of operation.  Too hot to touch for more than a moment.  I've been told this will eventually break down the wire insulation inside the transformer.

Both amps have exact same temp problem. Swapping tubes has no effect.

Please let me know if you have any diagnosis or troubleshooting or advice.  If anyone else has these amps, please let me know if you have this problem.

I would also be interested in contact info for experienced tube amp technicians in the Los Angeles area.

If its heating due age of the transformer, the wire varnish has aged and the wire turns may be glued, increasing resistance and generating overheating. If the core is not rusty it can be rewound.
How old are these transformers ?

I'm the 2nd owner, so I'm guessing the amps are 10-15 years old.  Does this make sense if both amps have the exact same symptoms?

Its rare indeed.
The transformers did not heat up before?
Happened any event suspicious lately?
