Help with Denon AVR-889, or similar model
« on: 24 Jan 2025, 08:07 am »
I have a Denon AVR-889 AV Receiver. I want to connect a HDMI source, and be able to have audio via HDMI (outputted to the TV) and be able to be heard through the stereo in a simple manner.

What do I need to do to accomplish that?

If your stereo system has a separate DAC with optical input (toslink) then connect HT receiver optical output to the DAC optical input. The TV will take in the HDMI and pass the full scale digital signal through to the optical output. It will not be affected by the TV speakers volume control.

If your stereo doesn't have optical input, then connect the HT receiver's RCA stereo "line out" to stereo preamp RCA stereo inputs.
Line out is not affected by Rx volume control, where a "preamp out" would be attenuated by the Rx volume control.

Your question is worded real strange. Why would you need to output audio to the TV? Connect the HDMI audio source to one of the Denon's HDMI inputs, pick that input number on the remote and music will play without the TV on. I listen to music and podcasts from my computer all the time which is connected to my surround processor by a HDMI cable. All audio is processed in the computer, HDMI is carrying some sort of digital analog signal.

If you are playing a ripped music video from a computer then it should work like a DVD, of course the TV has to be connected to the Denon by another HDMI cable.
The Denon can only decode/play MP3 files (MPEG Audio Layer-3) and AAC files (MPEG2-AAC / MPEG4-AAC). Input FLAC, WAVE or DSD and you probably won't get any sound.

Getting Sound Out of a TV

You will need a HDMI cable connected to the Denon's HDMI port that has the black surround. All connections are specified in the manual.

Choose the TV's HDMI IN/OUT port, which is found in the TV manual. Depending on the age of your TV, you may have to enable HDMI ARC or eARC in the TV SETUP onscreen menu. I had to dive into the onscreen menu to enable HDMI ARC in my 12 year old Panasonic plasma TV, which for some strange reason is called VIERA Link. Enabling HDMI ARC was easy after reading the downloaded PDF manual.

I don't own a Denon but all receivers work pretty much the same.

Monoprice is my go-to supplier for cables when I don't need them ASAP. I buy cables at Ace Hardware if I needed them yesterday. Amazon sells Monoprice cables too.

So, this is a simple setup for my parents: an area that needs something for occasional entertainment. I am trying to plan everything before I drag this receiver down to another state and I can't get it done without having to post here and wait for a reply. And, I can't really set it up here without having to screw with other setups.

I haven't used an AV receiver for a long time. But, I am not clueless on how to connect the HDMI to the ports. I just need help on the setting up on these modern receivers.  Last time it was DVD player component video going directly to the TV, and the DVD player had separate audio outputs used for DVD audio and CD audio. "CD" on that receiver was two channel stereo, and "DVD" was multichannel surround.

The source is a Roku box. They only have HDMI outputs. I want to be able to listen to the music channels/watch TV through the stereo. Does the average AV receiver pass through HDMI when the receiver is off?

I don't know about the average AV receiver, my Anthem AVM60 surround processor has be ON because everything is plugged into the Anthem where the video and sound is separated, video goes to the TV, sound to the speakers.
Just guessing but if the TV has 2 HDMI inputs then the Roku box can be plugged into one and the receiver's HDMI plugged into the TV's HDMI ARC input, check the TV's manual to find out which is which. Then Roku/TV can be watched with the receiver OFF.
HDMI ARC is bi-directional, turn on the receiver and sound will come out of the stereo speakers.

I also use an antenna for over-the-air TV, when the Anthem is OFF, sound comes from the TV. Turn ON the Anthem and TV is muted and all sound comes from the stereo speakers. A lot of TV shows and sports are broadcast in surround sound so usually the Anthem surround processor is ON for an immersive experience. Receivers also have a AM/FM radio, I'm listening to the radio through the stereo right now.

The Roku can be setup to turn the TV on and off too, that way your parents only have to push one button.

Tech support can be a pain, I have started to send my friends to YouTube for answers, every question in the universe is answered on YouTube. My friends feel empowered when they fix their problems by themselves.

If I understand the original question correctly you want to take an HDMI signal and send it to a TV and a stereo receiver at the same time. The simplest way of doing this might be to use an HDMI audio extractor box where instead of the audio being extracted from the HDMI signal and sent to the box's RCA output, the audio signal is duplicated to the RCA output.

Here's a link to a box that has two HDMI outputs instead of one. If I am interpreting the description properly, this particular box distributes the audio to both the HDMI and RCA outputs. So I think it addresses your issue.

The manual for the AVR-889 is readily available for download online. https://www.denon.com/on/demandware.static/-/Library-Sites-denon_northamerica_shared/default/dw900035eb/downloads/archived/avr-889-info-sheet-en.pdf

If you take a look at it, you'll see that the AVR-889 has four HDMI inputs, and one HDMI output.

Perhaps I'm misunderstanding the question, because there does not seem to be a problem to solve. More information could help.

... there does not seem to be a problem to solve.

The problems will show up later, extreme patience will be required.

If mix4fix's parents have any existing streaming services like Netflix or Amazon Prime then that info has to be added to the Roko menu. The process is easy IF the passwords can be found. Two factor authentication may happen.

I just set up a Roku for a friend last weekend. It goes like this:

Me: "Do you have Amazon Prime?"
Answer: "Yes"
Me: "You get free streaming with Prime, what is your password"
Answer: "???"
Solution: Reset password through email while simultaneously teaching parents how to use email, then write down new username and password on scrap piece of paper never to be seen again.

The new Amazon username and password will have to be entered next time anything is ordered from Amazon Prime. Scrap paper with info is lost, reset password again.
Roku then needs new, new username and password.
Repeat as necessary.

I get no HDMI out at all. Is there some setting I am forgetting?

Roku - Denon - TV
nothing

Roku - TV
works

No matter what input port I use, no HDMI.

The Denon plays audio from the HDMI, but no video of any kind.

this is a simple setup for my parents

Is the TV old like your parents? What is the make and model number?

Strange things can happen if the HDMI cable isn't firmly seated in each port.

Update: one issue is a resolution problem. That Denon doesn't pass 4K. I got it second hand but never put video through it. Still working on it.
