EPOS ES30 questions
« on: 23 Dec 2024, 09:20 pm »
A buddy of mine picked up a pair of these from an Estate sale. I know nothing of the brand. There are 3 sets of binding posts on the back(tweeter, mid and woofer). Is this connection some kind of 'tri-wire' configuration ? or is an outboard crossover network required ?

Epos is a British company and the model ES 14 is the one I lusted after back in the day, but could not afford  them. I also remember the ES 11, but the 14's are the ones that impressed. Did not know about the ES 30's.
The Epos designer was an ex-BBC engineer if I remember correctly.

Looks like they are tri wirable or single with jumpers to the mid and tweet.

''I have understood that the Epos ES25 cancellation problems that had caused a void in the middle of frequencies. This problem was reported in a review by Stereophile. It was a model that was not long in the market and was replaced by the ES30. Anybody know who the designer Epos ES30?

They were correct these alleged problems in the ES30? I have also understood that the impedance curve reflects the ES30 · lowered to 2 ohms.

Pro: Excellent low-bass with typical Epos exceptional Mid-range.
Con:  Very unforgiving with poor quality recordings.

An excellent speaker, particularly if partnered with high quality equipment. These speakers work best with 6 (six) mono power amps, but can be driven with a single integrated stereo amp.

Unfortunately the Bass drivers were bottoming out at high volumes and the dealer refunded my money.

Old post I know but came across this and wanted to chip in and say that mine did the same. ES30 was a good speaker but flawed. A 3-way that size should be able to take some Volume and the 30 just couldn’t, bottomed out all the time.
Ironically the ES22 could go much louder''

Epos has been making speakers for many years, partly summarized by the text from their web site below.

1988
In 1988 Epos was sold to Mordaunt-Short who had been bought by the TGI PLC group in 1987. Also in 1988 TGI PLC acquired the Creek Audio brand. Epos loudspeakers and Creek Audio electronics were sold side by side worldwide under Mordaunt-Short’s management. In 1994 Creek Audio was sold back to its founder Mike Creek.
1999
In 1999 TGI PLC group decided to close the Epos/Mordaunt-Short operations. The Epos loudspeaker part was sold to Michael Creek, the owner and managing director of Creek Audio Ltd.
2020
In 2020 Creek sold the Epos Loudspeaker brand to Karl-Heinz Fink, founder of German speaker designer firm FinkTeam and also head of acoustic design consultancy Fink Audio Consulting.

You might drop a note to the current company.  The new owner is a talented speaker designer, but has changed the line significantly.

That's some great info.  I too remember Epos as a well respected line back in the day, but didn't know what happened to them.
