Zu Omen DW6
« on: 14 Dec 2024, 04:22 pm »
Greetings all - long time since I've visited!  Curious if anyone has owned the Zu Omen DW6 speakers.  I'm thinking about giving them a go (a 2 yr old pair with the superfly upgrade), but I've never heard them.  Based on what is found online they have a reputation as great and shitty at the same time.
Speakers I've owned in the past include Wharfedale Lintons (Like em, but a touch laid back), Monitor Audio Silver 100 (liked them), various Audio Notes (liked all of them), various Von Schweikerts (liked all of them) and a bunch of others I can't recall.

I'd run them with low power tubes, mid power tubes and higher solid state.  Anyone's two cents worth is appreciated!

Can't comment on the DW6, but I've had the latest version of the Omen DW (before they moved on to the DW6) for more than a few years now. This would be somewhat equivalent as it has the Clarity cap upgrade as well. I've basically run them comfortably with a variety of tube amps 22 SET to 60 P-P watts per channel. Also in the mix was Class D and AB with the Galion A75. Easy load for virtually any amp, but I have used a pair of 25 ohm snubbing resistors to lower the impedance/smooth the impedance curve. Strictly an option though. So I'm not sure if going into single digit output watts would be a roaring success, but I suspect it just might be very rewarding as well. I'll try it myself some day.
I bought the DW in a quest to find a speaker that was comfortable playing a wide variety of music without complaining. Plus they were hard to resist back in the day when they went on sale for $995. Yes, they deviate from the typical audiophile approved terms such as accuracy, etc. Yet they get you closer to amplified music in a club setting, if that's what you seek. Basically they don't fall flat on any genre to my ear.
I'm fortunate to have two systems. One for the more the laid back approach like acoustic jazz, folk, etc. This system would most likely be considered "audiophile approved"  The system in my bigger room is where the DW's reside alternating with Klipsch Heresy 3's. This system was designed with the boogie factor in mind. Two HSU subs are in play here as well. Feel free to touch bases anytime.

Drove to KC Sunday and picked up the Zu DW6 Superfly. I can see why these have both rabid fans and haters. For my music preferences, they are a very satisfying match to my 60 watt tube amp with a liquid, spacious, yet detailed presentation. Based on what I'd read online, I thought they'd be more splashy in the highs, but that's not the case whatsoever. Great detail, never harsh.

Congrats. Glad it's worked out. These are very good all arounders that aren't particularly fussy. Always seemed to me that they let you enjoy the music first without a whole lot of fiddling. Yet I'm not saying that tube rolling and cable changes don't have an impact. Really a superb underrated mid-range as well due to their "nearly" single driver design. Of course I'm channeling this as a DW Mk.II owner, but I can't imagine the 6 not sharing the same characteristics.

Several years ago I bought a set of Soul Superfly.  At the time I had Conrad Johnson separates, 100 watt monoblocks.  Initially I loved them and bought a center channel for HT use.  They played as loud as I wanted and remained very clean.  I couldn't get low end bass in my room.  It would have been cured by adding a sub.  Over time I began to find the super tweeter fatiguing and eventually sold them.
