Mechanical hum in subwoofer
« on: 30 Nov 2024, 07:38 am »
I have a JL Audio F112 Fathom. It has a mechanical hum. I have replaced all the capacitors which appear to give problems. I am thinking of tightening the bolt on the transformer. Has anyone had experience with these. Am I on the right track or are there other more profitable avenues to try out.

Mechanical hum is presumably from the power transformer of the linear PS in the F112?

If so ... this may be the result of DC on your mains.  (The reason why your other components don't exhibit mechanical hum may be because they use smaller transformers?)

If it is DC ... you need to put a DC blocker between your sub and the wall socket.

Otherwise ... you might get a beneficial result from putting a pad of something like 6mm Sorbothane between the power traffo and the bottom panel of the case.  I would suggest you do not tighten the trafo bolt; my experience is that this additional mechanical tension - surprising as it may seem ... degrades the sound.

To check for AC power line caused problems.
Take it to a friends house in a different neighborhood.
