That is a great recommendation.  If he could spring for the Modius that would be even better.

In my opinion, Modius sounded a little too flat by comparison. Friend had one and brought it over to demo. Modi MB sounded more natural while still slightly committing sin of Omission with detail level. Another tone/timbre vs detail and measurement debate, but we won't bring that Schiit in here. Lol. We'll chalk it up to if rca vs XLR connections needed.  :thumb:

I own a modi 3 for a bedroom system and it sounds great for the price.  It has a nice warmer sound but it sounds thick for lack of a better term and detail is lacking a bit as you said.  The modius has a bit more air and transparency. Either one would be good.  I replaced the modi 3 with a Topping E50 which sounds better imho.  However it is little brighter sounding but has more detail air, transparency and a wider soundstage.  It is also not as reliable as the 2 schiits which are made in Texas, but I have had no issues with it.  I also bought a chinese LPS to use with it.

I'm looking for streamer recommendations as I'm totally new to this part of audio.  My system consists of Van Alstine SET-400 power amp and Transcendence T-10 tube pre-amp, Sony CDP-CE500 CD player, BIC Turntable, Audiovector QR1 bookshelf speakers. No DAC except inside the CD player.

I have WiFi in the house but no hard connection to internet in my listening room and it would be a hassle to do so. Internet is pretty fast, and my second audio system (for the living room) is three feet from the WiFi router.  Wife is not as interested in music as I am so no need to transmit same music to other rooms. I really enjoy the clarity, detail, and excellent sound quality of my system and would like to stream similar quality music: classic rock, jazz, blues, pop, classical, acoustic.

Someone I know suggested the little round WiiM, but I'm not sure if it is capable of providing critical listening quality music. Budget is < $500 for the device itself.  I have not idea which service(s) to use either.  So summing up, the main objective is streaming music in my listening room, having streaming in the living room would (second system) would be a bonus but not worth a lot of $ as it gets only a few hours a week use. Thanks for any insight, thoughts, recommendations.
I have the Wiim mini and smsl su1 dac.  The smsl dac and any of the Wiim products offer really excellent value.  I have used Spotify, Deezer and Amazon music but have moved on to Tidal which is my favorite so far.  You can try them all as there are no long term contracts.

Add a pair of JBL LSR305P MKII at Amazon for $238/pair including isolation pads and cables. Add another $20 for RCA to TRS adapters and one has themselves a kick butt setup for $521.

Have a little more cash to burn? $299 gets you an RSL 10E Subwoofer. Have an extra $100 but not $300? There's an Edifier T5 subwoofer for $99, though I have no idea as to how it sounds.

Need stands? Monoprice has you covered for $45 for a pair of desktop stands or $66 for a pair of floor stands.

I ordered my WiiM Ultra yesterday from Crutchfield @ 1650 it arrived on my doorstep less than an hour ago ! Now that's service !

So, those with this unit, did you use its inboard DAC or something external ? My other option would be my SACD player (Marantz 'Ruby')

As for streaming service, I'm leaning towards Qobuz

Please let us know how this project works out. I have a nephew who is in college, looking to add digital to his vinyl set up and I'm curious about the WiiM.

Thanks everyone for your comments and suggestions. I appreciate all of them. Seems like there are many good options.

twitch54 that's a great price for the Wiim Ultra. Will be anxious to hear whether you like the onboard DAC or decide on an external one.

Does it matter if I am MAC based rather than PC based ?  IIRC there were suggestions for a unit that ran on Windows.  My laptop is older and doesn't seem to have Airplay. It's a late 2015 Macbook Air running El Capitan Version 10.11.6

so far the onboard DAC of the WiiM Ultra sounds great, I'll continue with it for awhile then try out the one in my Marantz Ruby to see if I can hear a difference, I doubt it !

Still unable to get my Android phone paired with the WiiM, I had no trouble with my iMac. Can't seem to get the phone to recognize the streamer ?

I would research this in the WiiM forum. https://forum.wiimhome.com/

I have seen a number of posts over time there on connectivity issues. The generic answer is make sure all devices have the latest firmware and software updates applied. Reboot all devices including your cable modem, WiFi router, WiiM and phone.

Make sure the WiiM and the Android are on the same frequency band (e.g. 2.4 Ghz).

I have a WiiM Mini, WiiM Pro, WiiM Pro+ and Node 2i. The internal DAC in all of these is nothing to write home about and can be improved with the $80 SMSL SU-1 outboard DAC. I wouldn't be surprised if the Ultra could also benefit from an SU-1. I'd recommend the WiiM Pro if you plan to add an outboard DAC.

In my experience the WiiM platform is superior to BluOS ( Node ) and I absolutely love its room correction feature.

I use Amazon HD Unlimited streaming service since I'm already a Prime member and if paid by the year it's the least expensive option ( around $100 with Prime ).

While I'm new to streaming as well as my WiiM Ultra, I'm pretty sure the Ultra's DAC (ESS ES9038 Q2M)is superior to the lesser models below it. Regardless, after my initial listening I will try out the DAC in my Marantz SACD player (Ruby) which I know is superb.

You're paying for additional features with the Ultra not superior sound. The Ultra has a built in power supply which is almost impossible to upgrade. OTOH the Pro models use a wall wort that is easily upgraded with a linear PSU.

So you're saying the DAC in the Ultra is not better than the one in the two models below it ?

LOL, upgrade the power supply in a $263 streamer ? For crying out loud I bought it to get my feet wet, hell that's nothing more than a nice dinner out with my wife !

I'm saying that if you use the Pro or Pro+ as a transport with an inexpensive DAC like the $80 SU-1 the SQ will equal or better the Ultra's internal DAC.

Here's the objective Audio Science Review of the Ultra and you can see how it's DAC ranks with the SU-1. The measured performance of the SU-1 should be even stronger with the addition of a linear power supply which I use with mine.
