Vandersteen 1 Setup Suggestions
« on: 13 Nov 2024, 06:23 pm »
Howdy,

I just moved and finally have a space to setup my original Vandersteen 1s in a bedroom that will used as my office and listening room.  I am the original owner from the late 1980's but haven't fired these up in about 8 years.  I do have the original T stands and the user manual for Tilt Configurations.  I am looking for suggestions on the following.

1. What hardware do you suggest I buy to power these with?  My intent is just to listen to streamed music only from Tidal and Spotify.  The unit will have hard wired Ethernet so no wifi necessary.
2. I have a lower end Klipsh subwoofer, should I use it or not needed with my setup up or a bad match?

The ideal unit is a high quality Amp/Receiver that has excellent power and is a good match to drive the speakers, supports Tidal's lossless streaming and spotify, and allows control from my phone.  Hopefully something exists in one unit.

Tidals website does have a lot of supported devices as well.

Thanks in advance!

I would look at the WiiM Amp Pro, WiiM Amp, and the Wiim Ultra. The Ultra would need to be paired with your favorite Fosi or other power amp.

All three will give you built in Spotify, Tidal, and a subwoofer output. There's also a $329 streaming unit from Yamaha (R-N303) that I believe has a subwoofer output.

If your budget is higher than $500, there are streaming amplifier offerings from Cambridge Audio, Audiolab, Bluesound, Marantz, Onkyo, and NAD to name a few.

The Vandy's will outclass your lower end Klipsch subwoofer but you may prefer the setup with the subwoofer in as it may give you a bit more punch to the low end.
