Cheap speakers for a starter system
« on: 8 Nov 2024, 12:11 pm »
I bought a demo Pro-Ject TT with a built in phono preamp as I am asked sometimes to set up a budding audiophile with a stereo. My chance has arrived, I'm setting up a system for a 14 year old girl who is fascinated by my rig when she visits. So on the basis of the Stereophile review, I bought the WIIM amp. Now all I need is a pair of speakers...

BUT I live in Michigan and they live in Florida. I can send the TT and amp in the original boxes and was hoping to send a pair of new speakers directly to her home. They will be visiting for Christmas so I can show her how to hook everything up when she returns to Florida.

The Andrew Jones Pioneers were my go-to speakers, NLA,  looking for some new suggestions from the community please.

Thanks!

Paul

I'd check out the cheapaudiman. I think he covers the ultra low end space pretty well.

Sony SS5, Micca, Swans/HiVi, Klipsch perhaps. You could also consider a kit like this:

I built a set of those C-Note speakers for my nephew and they sound really damn good for the $. Toss a sheet of No-Rez in there since the cabinet is thin, but otherwise it's solid for a starter.

I recommend the used market for best bang for the buck, since you are already shipping to FL. How much room does she have (assuming book shelf speakers) I saw a pair of meadowlark towers here in MI for sale for $200. Was tempted but already have too much stuff. I did the same for my daughters, found good used speakers paired with fosi streaming amp, sounds great and affordable. I sometimes see AV123 Encores for pretty cheap in the used market. For $250 you can get some really good buys that would out perform the Amazon speakers.

What a nice guy!
We bought one of our kids a pair of Polk Audio Signature Elite ES10 to pair with a WIIM amp a couple of years ago.  They’re about $250.  Not cheap but sounded pretty good.
NHT SuperZero 2.1 from NHT or Amazon for the same $250 a pair.  The C3 is a speaker I’ve had in mind for many years.  One day I’ll come to my senses and pick up a pair and be forever content. https://www.nhthifi.com/products/superzero-2-1-our-amazing-mini-monitor-single
RSL CG-3 @ $105 ea.  I have a pair of CG4s in a desktop system that I like real well https://rslspeakers.com/products/cg3m-bookshelf-speaker

I would look at the Wharfedale 225's.  They are a slightly warmer sounding and forgiving speaker.  A lot of cheaper gear tends to sound bright so they would pair well with cheaper electronics.

They should not be to difficult to drive at 87db sensitivity and they are 8 ohm with 4 ohm low. They have a low freq response of 45Hz so bass won't be too anemic.

Here is a review on them-

I also have to agree with the Triangle Borea. They are easy to drive at 90db sensitivity and 8ohms.

Am looking at all of the suggestions, thank you again. Was hoping to spend 200 or less. But then again, I realize as she gets ready for college and life, spending a bit more now will yield future dividends forever. So maybe 300 is a better budget.

I saw Micca speakers on Amazon...

Just received this from my buddy. I set up his son with a stereo two years ago: vintage Pioneer receiver, Pro-Ject TT and speakers (forgot the brand)...He sent a pic of his rig at college with a message:

"Took for granted how cool this thing is. Probably the best gift I’ve ever recieved, and you’ve given me plenty of good ones to choose from!! Thank you!

From my son Chris.
Enjoying the turn table"

Fun hobby, eh?

Check out QAcoustics.  I always thought the 3010 was a solid contender in that price range.

I would look into Wharfedale Diamond series.   Several models in the 250 to 350 dollar range.  Good reviews -- reported to be forgiving and musical.

Nice $200 discount on this pair, to bring it within budget:

I own the Wharfedale Denton 80 in a second system, medium size room.  Quite nice.

The problem with the Diamond series is its Sensitivity ratings of 84-85 db with nominal 4 ohms.  If she wants to play it loud as a lot of kids do, it may shut down a cheap amp. Thats why I recommended the Wharfedale 225's which are rated at 87db.

Some confusion here.  The speaker I linked is 87db sensitive, and 8 ohm impedance (4.5 min, I think).

And the exact model name is "Diamond 225".  Perhaps same 225 that you refer to?

Diamond 220 is another model in the lineup.  I believe specs are the same.

Sorry, I thought you were talking about the Diamond 12 series not the 225's. I also sent a link to music direct for the 225's.

So the WIIM amp has 60 watts per channel, is that enough to drive an 86 db sensitivity speaker?
