beatles mobile fidelity box set concern
« on: 5 Nov 2024, 01:49 am »
I worked at Streetside Records WAY back in the day and bought a Beatles Mobile Fideiity box set (#5631)  True audiophiles, please don't judge me too harshly, but I recorded each album to cassette because I didn't think I had a system good enough to consistently play the albums and I wanted to preserve them.  I had waited to copy the albums and missed the 120 day warranty deadline if there were issues  There were.  On side two of Abbey Road there were pops for two or three rotations of the album that seemed more than simple "it's a new album" or something had crept onto the album.  Fast forward forty years and without having played any of the albums since, I'm considering selling the set but would like to see if the sound issues have a solution.  Anyone have any suggestions at this point?

I'm not the official record guy around these parts, but have you given the record a good cleaning?
Also, your post would get more views in the vinyl section of AudioCircle, as opposed to the STL area.

40 years not playing them because you think your system is not good enough, wow don’t know what to say. It’s not about the system, it’s about the music. If you love the music, play it on any turntable and enjoy.

No record is 100% perfect, you will get the odd clicks and pop, like Bob in St. Louis said put them through a record cleaner and see what comes out.

Someone is going to get a bargain, sorry to laugh but whenever I hear someone say “I recorded my record on first play and put it a way to preserve them” I just see someone that don’t know how to live.

You are more than welcome too bring them over and I will run them through my ultrasonic cleaner and then give them a spin on my setup which is definitely able to tell you how well or not the pressing is for them.

I would agree that a good cleaning may solve the pops and clicks problem. It’s certainly worth a try. But, in the event that it doesn’t completely eliminate them, I think it’s important to disclose that at the time of sale. Let potential buyers know that you’ve identified this issue with the pressing. If the rest of the set is in good condition, it will likely have minimal impact on the overall value. Also, you could try playing the album on another turntable to see if the issue is replicated to the same degree that you heard on your system 40 years ago.

Hi,

If the box set is worth a reasonable amount of money I'd have the records cleaned professionally. It would't cost much.

OP has 1 post here on AC total, a month ago.  I don't think he's coming back, lol.
