NX Studio "Scrapper"
« on: 14 Sep 2024, 09:58 pm »
Been gone from these parts since the days of the Super V.
Had some pulp coned full ranger JBL LE8s looking for work, thought I'd bump the plans, gather MDF waste and marry things with the PE Neo 3 planar, 1" denim faced 1# MLV, and finish in Mohawk perfect brown lacquer.
Baffle is 1", Neo cutout 45* full depth chamfer, requiring a mount plate to attach planar which remains flush with rear baffle surface. Top (incline) is full 3/4 rather than plan's 1/2". The top and bottom drivers are as physically close as can be. Driver time align is very close. JBLs run full range, they drop out around 5k. Simple coil/cap hi pass to Neo at 3k. Sound is exemplary, neo open baffle is best described as a smooth airy horn, JBL plays 40ish low, punctual within design's inert construction. Huge stage, image outstanding, these play "large" in my 15x24' diffusion attenuated room, giant killers ! May try a lower pass filter at some point Thanks for the plans, Danny.

It looks like you put a Sunburst on the baffles! It looks like my Strat Ultra. Very nice!

They look great! Did you do any measurements in your room?

Thanks for the compliment "Borism". No OS or Windows here. Anyone with an IOS based software program, please illuminate. 750 plus reads, only 2 found it more than entertainment

That's a really creative interpretation!  Nice job repurposing your existing drivers, although I almost fell off the chair when I saw what a used pair of those go for.  :o

When you say the JBLs drop off around 5k, this "full range" driver tanks so fast you don't need anything to roll it off?

Also, not sure how you're getting into the lowish 40's?  I'm not a speaker designer, but that seems awfully low for a sealed box and driver that size?

The LE8s deserve every bit their reputation and following. Very clean linear response, see factory docs at their well appointed site. GR claims the NX reaches into the 40s but I have yet to hear of any room response software for IOS🤔, so respectfully retract my claim. Thanks for the compliment Dayneger. Later.

The NX tower models can reach into the low-mid 40s in moderate size rooms or 50Hz in larger rooms
The NX-Studio is rated at 70Hz, but up against a wall may dig a little lower.
The NX-Bravo is tuned to 55Hz, but with a longer port & near-wall placement they can get down to the ~40-45Hz range
