Print Screen W11 Pro
« on: 24 Aug 2024, 07:52 pm »
I have searched with Google and all the suggestions do not work.

On my W10 computer there was a dedicated "print screen" key next to the "scroll lock" key. It worked without any problems. My new keyboard for W11 combines the print screen key with the F9 key. I have tried both print screen alone and with alt + print screen. When I go to the Microsoft Paint app there is never anything to paste.

Same results using the Windows key plus print screen.

I do not see an F-lock key on my computer. Where would it be? One suggestion said it might be engaged and I would need to press it again to disengage.

Some suggestions on Google mention a screenshots folder under pictures. I do not see one in the pictures folder.

Congratulations Microsoft for making something much more difficult than it used to be.

Came back to W10 asap, there is much more bad news on W11 to come. I suspect Alt Ctr Del dont works on W11.

What keyboard? Is it on a laptop? The "Print Screen" key on my old IBM keyboard bring up the small Snipping Tool at the top of the screen.

You may be able to re-map the F9 key using Microsoft Power Toys Keyboard Manager
https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/powertoys/

I still use the free PrintKey 2000 v.5.10 but after 25 years it's getting a little buggy with W11. I exit and re-start when fails to start. I'm used to it so I swat the bugs and keep using it. No PrintKey 2000 doesn't open using the Print Screen button either.

There are plenty of screen grab tools both free and paid.

There is some recipes on goo:
= Press the Windows logo key + Shift + S to get a static image cutout.

= Key Print Screen.

= Key Windows + Print Screen.

= Key Alt + Print Screen.

= Tool capture Windows + Shift + S

= Print with Xbox Game Bar.

Try holding down the fn key on the bottom left of the keyboard while simultaneously pressing the function key labeled prt sc . This might be be the f9 key.

If your keyboard has a button to the right of the f12 key that looks like a printer with a piece of paper, you can try pressing it to see if the screen prints.

Doublej,

Thank you. fn+print screen worked. That never came up in any Google search.  :evil:Then I have to select full screen from a menu that appears at the top of my screen. That yields a message at the bottom right corner of my screen allowing me to "select here to mark up and share". That puts me into a window to save.

f8 is the key with the printer and paper icon on this keyboard.

The snipping tool is forced upon me when I do not want it. The menu where I select full screen has other options that do not seem to work. Another example of software that does so many things I do not want it is difficult to do what I do want. I think programmers sit around drinking red bull (or something else) looking for ways to justify their salaries. Or maybe they are just plain evil. :icon_twisted:

I use greenshot for screenshots. It is free and works well with Windows 11. YMMV, but you can tweak it to use another key if you’d like. https://getgreenshot.org/

Perhaps it is time to abandon Windows in favor of Linux. I dual boot Windows and Zorin OS on an old Dell laptop and Zorin OS is looking pretty solid. Its faster than Windows on it.

Zorin can be a good option.
Meanwhile for us W10/11 mortals always keep your personal files backup up to date just in case this shit explode.

Thanks for all the tips from everyone. I found my screenshots. Lots of them from my trials. For some reason a "screenshots" folder was set up under "pictures" for a different user. I never set up that user so I am terribly confused.  I found the folder by using the search function at the bottom of my screen. The search bar I used is next to the Windows square.

Now I have to figure out how to get rid of that user and get everything back under my folders. This is a new desktop so something happened during setup. I am the only user. The user name is an abbreviated version of one of my gmail account names.

For screen capture with Win11, I've been using the ancient IrfanView graphic file viewer.  I've been using that free software since the late '90s.  To do a screen capture, just fire up IrfanView and press the 'C' key.  You get a dialog asking what kind of capture you want to do. The choices are:
  • Full desktop area - all monitors
  • Desktop area - current monitor
  • Foreground window
  • Foreground window - client area
  • Custom rectangle/region capture
  • Object selected with the mouse
  • Fixed screen rectangle (allows entering screen coordinates)
After choosing the format and clicking Start on the dialog, IrfanView minimizes itself.  You press a hotkey to perform the capture itself.  The hotkey defaults to Ctrl+F11, which I always leave alone, but you can define it to be anything you want

It's an old-style Win32/Win64 program, so its use should be familiar.  You can save the captures to a whole lot of different graphics formats.  I use it extensively to do screen grabs to produce online software documentation.  It works fine under Win11.  Great graphics viewer too, with slideshow capability.  I also use it to do artwork maintenance for my music collection, like cropping and resizing.
