Furman PST-8 $89.95 - B&H - deal ends today
« on: 16 Aug 2024, 01:52 pm »
B&H has a "deal of the day" which lasts for just one day and today (8/16) it is the Furman PST-8 power strip.
Manufacturer's Description:
"The Furman PST-8 Digital Power Station features Furman's SMP circuitry which incorporates Linear Filtering Technology (LiFT) and a high current TVZ-MOV to insure that any electronic device is fed clean, filtered AC power. This dramatically reduces noise, ensuring consistent peak performance from all equipment."

Quick question -- I can't tell from the description: does this provide surge suppression/protection from spikes? Or does it just ensure clean power?

I lost a couple amp boards a year+ ago in my Neumann desktop active monitors, so I'd like that not to happen again.   :icon_lol:

Thanks in advance for your reply,  -dGB

Yes. I've had 2 of these units for many years now, one on my HT system, and one on my office system. They function very well to this day. Here's a link to Furman's page on the noted unit. https://furmanpower.com/product/15a-8-outlet-surge-suppressor-strip-w-smp-lift-and-evs/

I have also used their Elite 15 PFi unit on my main system for as long as I can remember without issue or failure.

Sorry, one more related question: I believe MOVs are what is used in standard power strips, yes? I have been reading that MOVs wear out over time and (may) no longer provide surge protection, even though the operational light is on for the power strip. Is this correct? If so, how often should one replace a power strip? Every X years? Or only when they no longer function?

Am thinking this may be what happened to kill off my Neumann monitors. They were connected to a surge suppressor bus, but clearly the bus didn't do its job. Granted, it was a BIG surge due to a massive electrical storm -- the surge hit before I could power off/disconnect the monitors -- but still.

Not sure I feel good about having equipment at risk when I think it should be safe. Is there a good rule of thumb/general guideline for how often to replace a surge suppressor power strip?

And a P.S. Does it make sense to daisy-chain power strips just to have "serial protection"? I would think perhaps not, as this might limit current. Don't MOVs limit current?

Ridiculous. Tried to order 2: order system wanted to charge me $89 for the first one, $239 for the second. Yet it allowed me to order 2 @$89 in two separate orders. Going to cost B&H more in shipping/handling for the same order, but that's their problem.

Just an FYI. If you order multiples, check your Shopping cart/order carefully.

Just received these yesterday. These are built like a battleship. Assuming the components inside are similarly robust? I read something that you should replace any MOV devices every 3-5 years. This looks like it is pretty well/over built. How long have people operated these in their rigs? How long should I expect this to last? Opinions from folks who own these? Thanks.

Overall, pretty impressed with the build for this price.
