Bryston 4B-st first time byer
« on: 8 Aug 2024, 10:25 pm »
Hi. I am a 65 year old hi-fi enthusiast, milling operator and car mechanic from Norway. Hi-fi and motorcycles are in my hobbies. Now I am in for buying a Bryston 4B-st amplifier, but I am unsure what to look for, I don't want to fell in a costly trap. There is only one owner from new. No documented services. You have to excuse my bad English writing. From before I have some JBL ti5000 speakers in excellent condition, as I think can work perfectly fine with such an amp. Does anybody have an opinion about buying this Bryston 4st amp? Best Regards.

Do you need all the 4B huge power?
If your loudspeaker are hi efficiency as 100dB and benign 8 ohms impedance you need just a sweet small tube amp.

To FullRangeMan:
Hmm.. I have not thought much about that... The speakers are 90db and 6 ohm. I am missing a good fundament in the music. I have no experience with tube amps. Actually I have never heard any live. I have always imagine that a lot of power will do the work, you know Elektrocompaniet, Dynamic Precision and so on (in Norway) Now, when the kids have grown up and moved out, I have more time for my hobbies, and now I have beginning looking around for upgrading my hi-fi. From before I have being busy with surround sound, bur since my tinnitus not get any better, I have just being looking around for some more fundament in the music so I can get away with less volume, and not so much sound around me. My surround amplifier is an Yamaha DSP-Z11 (in USA, RX-Z11) I have planning to use that dsp as a pre-amp in stereo mode.  I don't know if that is the best idea, but maybe as a beginning point. I am playing a lot of vinyl by my technics sl-1200 mk1, and a ASR (Germany) riaa. Most of my lp's I have collected since -70's. Every input I can get regarding this will be good  :D

Hi Blaster,
So with this low efficiency 90dB and 6 ohms you will need all the 4B power IMO.
