Free shipping crates for VR-4 JR in NYC
« on: 30 Jul 2024, 01:06 am »
I just bought some VR-4 JR's and have nowhere to store the wood boxes. They are really nice so it would be a shame to toss them... but if no one wants them, they are going in the trash.
NYC, zip code = 11694 (actually, Rockaway Beach, but it's technically NYC)

What’s your experience with the JRs so far? (Just curious – I’ve owned a pair of these for a long time.)

I haven’t hooked them up because I’m using Aerial Acoustic 10T’s (which I fully expect to sound better) until I sell them. Supposedly someone is buying them this weekend, so then I’ll use the VR4’s.

It would be interesting to hear a comparison  after you hear the VR4jr.

Have Fun!

I suggest filling the cavities in the bottom of the speakers with weight, as the manual suggests, and bi-wiring them. In my experience both these things made a noticeable difference. I haven’t had the opportunity to hear the 10Ts (I know they have a good reputation) – but you may be pleasantly surprised by the JRs.  Let us know.

Funny, I just started listening to these when you sent that. They are already filled with sand (just to make getting them up to the second floor of my house fun ).
So, I first played the last song I "tested" the 10T's with for the buyer- Pink Floyd's Money. I left the settings the same on my amp; keep in mind, I use tone controls *gasp*. I had the bass almost full, the treble on max, and the midrange around 10 o'clock. The first thing I noticed was the missing bass; I knew these couldn't keep up with the 10T's, because they were amazing. They don't sound thin, though. If I never had the 10T's, I'd probably be impressed with the bass these little things can produce. The 10T's were kinda forward which is why I had the midrange backed-off. I moved that to 12 o'clock and it sounds better than it did at 10 o'clock. The rear tweeters were on 3 originally. I moved them up to full, then back to zero, and settled on 7ish.
These things sound pretty good... better than I expected. I'm listening to a remastered Aqualung LP because it's a great album to test with. Plus, I like the songs.
Without tone controls, I couldn't listen to the VR4's, but as they are (in my current system), I think I can live with them. Plus, my wife really likes how they look. I have to admit, they look a LOT better than the 10T's in our room.

Edit - I'm bi-wiring them. Separate cables to the bass cabinet and mid cabinet (4 total).

Occasionally I think I should get new speakers -- certainly manufacturers have improved their products over the last 20 years.  One factor that keeps me from doing so is the appearance of the JRs; I have seen very few speakers in my price range that look as good.  (And of course I like the sound of the JRs.)  Good to hear that you are bi-wiring.

The JRs can do bass, although perhaps not as much as your 10Ts.  I have some pipe organ recordings that shake my listening chair, with the volume only 2/3 of the way up (250 watt amp -- PS Audio BHK 250). And no subwoofer :thumb:.  Of course room acoustics are much involved.  My chair is closer than ideal (wall/room issues), but still . . . .  My house has an open floor plan, although the listening area is smaller.

It might be interesting to turn off all the tone controls (including the rear tweeters), adjust the placement and toe-in of the speakers so they sound best, then add back the tone controls.  That's what the manual suggests.  I don't know how much flexibility you have with placement.

I've made many upgrades to my system since I bought the JRs, and they always let me here the changes from new equipment or cables -- they are certainly revealing.  For a physically small speaker at a reasonable price, they were a remarkable buy.  But perhaps they are not the ideal speaker for bass-heavy rock, which I don't listen to often, or in a larger room.

My stereo is in the living room and there’s very little space to move. I pull the speakers out from the wall a bit (less than 2’), but there is not much else I can do. No room treatments, either.
I only listen to rock, so no  pipe organs . I guess they can go fairly low (what I meant when I said they don’t sound thin), but lack that punch-in-the-chest bass you get from bigger speakers.
After I wrote that last night, I turned the rear tweeters back to max and seemed to like that better.

Mine still sound great in my secondary system. Bi-wired and 50lbs lead shot in bottom cabinets.
