Favorite V8 engines

Always liked low rpm engines, mainly L4 and V6 engines, 90º and Flat, but V8 also are nice beside more parts and more cost, but are suited to big engines over 6 Liters.

My favorite V8 engine is the Dodge Dart 1970s V8 318LA, small block, Low A, initially offered 273 cubic inches 198hp to 215hp and then 318 inches.
V8, 5,212 cm3, 2 valves per cylinder, single overhead camshaft, double-barrel carburetor; 198 hp at 4,400 rpm; Torque 41.5 mkgf at 2,400 rpm.

There was an 4.5 liter V8 entry-level engine. In addition to the sport GT, there was the GTS with a small-block V8 (5.6 liters/279 hp) and a big-block V8 (6.3 liters/304 hp).

We had a Dodge Dart and a Dodge Polara in the 70's with the 318 engine.  I also had 351 Cleveland.  Great engine.

The original 360 V8 in my old 1977 Jeep Wagoneer, 280,970 miles and still running strong.

I recently sold the Wagoneer, it now lives in Moab, Utah and still a great climber. Here it is on Hell's Revenge Trail

I was always partial to the Ford 289/302.  Friends had Mustangs and Mavericks with one or the other that always ran well.  I had a ‘68 Cougar XR-7 with 230K on the clock when we parted ways that was always eager to start, ran like new, and never leaked a drop.  I don’t recall which engine it had.

I’ll take the 6.2L V8 in my 2016 Corvette. 460HP and 460lbs torque with the performance exhaust.

Not a V8, but I'll take my Gen 1 Cummins in my '93 truck.  Most engines can last a few hundred thousand miles.  Cummins often go over a million.

:thumb: From the original 265. Ah such memories.  :D

Dad had a '64 Dart company car with the old slant 6. I had a '57 Plymouth Savoy coupe with the 318, 3 spd on the column. Bought it from some folks on my paper route, selling the '56 Chev 210 4 door I bought from Mom with the 265 Powerslush (boy do I wish I'd kept that one now). Like many MoPar's of the day prone to rust, but a fun ride. If memory serves the 318 was originally MoPar's truck engine, tweaked for their mid performance models prior to coming up with the 383, 426, & 440 wedge. Classic stuff.

I was always partial to the Ford 289/302.

Pound for pound one of the best.  :thumb:

My favorite V8 will most likely be my "Last V8", pun intended...

2021 was the last year Toyota put their infamous 5.7L V8 engine in the Tundra.  That was one of the main selling points when I bought this 2021 TRD Pro 4WD.  The 2022+ years have a V6 bi turbo engine which has been very problematic for Toyota so far.

I had a Plymouth Duster, a 1970 I think, with a 198 slant 6 that was indestructible.  I was 17 and abused the &#@ out of it and it just kept on coming back for more.  It was definitely the easiest engine to work on.

The GM LS1, LS2 and LS3 are all excellent engines with great HP and Torque and easy to hot rod.

I had - nearly 40 years ago! - a Porsche 928S. The 928 was largely unloved because it wasn't a 911, was front-engined and water-cooled, and had the goofiest headlights this side of a Bugeye Sprite. But it was faster, more powerful, and had a better lap time around the Nurburgring than the 911.
It had a glorious V8 for the era: 288 bhp, which Car and Driver noted was "one-third more power than Chevrolet's fuel-injected V-8 of the same displacement and 104 bhp more than Mercedes' American-specification 5.0-liter V-8." It also had an incredible torque band, with more than 250 pounds-feet available all the way from 1300 to over 6000 rpm.
Unfortunately, maintenance was more than I, as a young family man, could continue to justify...

I put a cammed LS1 in a Porsche 928. Lighter weight and more HP made it one fun sleeper...

Best friend had a '78 Chrysler LeBaron with the 318 in it.  We had a lot of fun in that one in high school in the mid-late 80's.

I really enjoyed the 7.0L/429 in the '69 T Bird I owned for 7 years.  That with the 3 speed auto was just floating along, such a great throwback to the wagons of my youth.

I am currently very much enjoying the 5.0L/302 in my '05 CLK.  It is a smooth experience, just ready to move out but without any drama.  Likely my last V8.

My 2009 BMW M3 (e90 S65)!  This is the last M3 generation to have a naturally aspirated V8.

It can be a Jekyll and Hyde type of engine.  Keep the rpms low and it can be relatively docile.  Let the RPM's fly (redline is 8,400) and around 6,000 it transforms into a snarling beast!!

The stock S65 engine was rated at 414 hp at 8,400 rpm and 295 lb⋅ft of torque at 3,900 rpm.

My personal M3 has some additional work (exhaust, software tune) that gets it to around 450hp and 400 lb ft of torque.

Thank you. Was a fun project to build. I also put a cammed GM 5.3 in a 944. 700 lbs lighter than my friend's C5 and could walk on him easily.

Chevy small block 327 from the original 283.

your close, the original (1955) was a 265

As for the Op stated the 318 MoPar was a overhead cam motor, no, it was a overhead 'valve' motor.

As for the greatest V8 of all time subjective at best but in the world of SB V8's ..............bowtie baby !

5.9L good motor

The tranmissions...yuck

The 318 is a great Mopar motor, imho better than the 5.7

GM and Ford also made some great V8 motors that out out a lot of power, the small block v8s are reliable. I have a 6.7 powers stroke. Really like that diesel. My favorite Ford is probably the 4.9 str8 6.

GM LS7. 7L or 427 cu in, 505 hp. Easily 650 hp with basic head/cam upgrade. Used in the C6 Z06 Corvette and 5th Gen Z28 Camaro.
