Revel Ultima Salon 2 with 28B³?
« on: 23 Jun 2024, 07:28 pm »
I went way over budget when I bought these Revels. Like, way over!  :duh:

However, they sound great when driven by my AVA Vision Set 400. I cannot complain but I've often heard that these speakers love power; the more the better.

The AVA is no slouch at delivering power. Rated at 225@8 ohm, 450 @ 4. These speakers are 6 ohm, so I figure they're getting around 300W.

As I was saying I love the sound of these when driven by the AVA, but, I keep wondering how much of an appreciable and noticeable difference there would be if I was to hook them up to the monstrous 28B³(s). Is it time to bust the budget again? LOL.

Any thoughts on what to expect? I have read the reviews of the monoblocks, but figure it'd be good to hear from people who live and breathe Bryston.

Also, if there is someone in here using this particular combination it would be awesome to hear from you.

Preamp is a BP-26, source is various coming through a Denafrips Pontus II

It's difficult to offer advice when it relates to this wonderful hobby, er... perhaps a better term would be "passion" when it comes to audio.

Fifteen years ago I was in the very same situation - my goodness, where has the time gone? I had already settled on JBL 1400 Project Array speakers as they were perfect for my ears. The real dilemma was deciding to purchase a pair of 7s or a pair 28s as there was not a huge difference between them  (diminishing returns)- both of them are simply awesome amplifiers . In the end, the 28s ended up on the shelf and I have never looked back.

Another concern for myself was that I did not want to climb aboard the constant upgrade wagon - buy it once and enjoy.

Just to add an interesting side note, below was my original system and what it was replaced with, ironically I would often look at the SR-19 and question my decision to spend the money that I did for it - not once have I ever considered this on any component in my current system.

KEF Q1 Bookshelf speakers   - JBL 1400 Project Arrays
Marantz SR-19 receiver        -  28B SST²/BP 26
Marantz CC-38 CD player      - Esoteric X-05

May your audio purchase bring you many years of audio bliss.

Be well...

I recently read that there will not be a 28 cube as there was no demand for it. So, you will have to be content with the 28 square.

Not sure about that....

I believe that Bryston has been building cubed 28Bs for a few years now and then run about $30k CDN a pair, more than a couple of dealers still showing their availability. Now whether or not there is sufficient demand as of late to keep them in the stable of cubed amps may well be a other story...

Depending on the OP's room size and desired listening levels cubed 7Bs might be all that he needs.

BTW, with no affiliation with the seller, there is a listed used pair of cubed 28s on Canuckaudiomart

Apparently, I was wrong. It was the 24B cube that was cancelled for lack of interest. Sorry for the erroneous post.  :(

I bought a pair of 28 squared mono blocks about 10 years ago and they are wonderful!

My speakers are VMPS RM-30 series2, not particularly sensitive.  Delicate high end and resolving as one could wish for in a speaker.  I had a Bryston 4 squared previously which I did manage to drive to clipping once

The 28 squareds sound far better too. Sweet, delicate high end and plenty of gusto when needed. The 28 squared is better than the Cubed in that its first 50 watts are Class A.  The Cubed is far less but don’t recall the wattage count.  Class A presentation is exquisite!

My only wish is that the first 150 watts were Class A. [sigh].  If I want that I’d need to get the Pass Labs XA-160.

I’ve heard the Van Alstine M225 with a set of VMPS RM-2 speakers and they were impressive. However, they choked badly when my friend hooked them up to his Magneplaners. I wonder if they are low current?

No worries about running out of current with the 28s!

BTW, there is another pair for sale ( still listed, on 6-26-24 ), on usaudiomart, for a stunning price.

The Revels are a fairly kind impedance load and phase angle.  You will be more than happy with a pair of 7B3, maybe even just a 4B3.

I am a new user to this site, but not new to Bryston equipment.  I have owned a pair of Revel Ultima2 Salon2s driven by two Bryston 28B SST2 amplifiers for 15 years.  In addition, I have a Bryston BP26 Preamplifier incorporated into my system as well.  If you still have questions regarding this combination and would like to speak with someone who has experience with this setup, please feel free to contact me.  It is in my experience that the Revel Salon2s will take any amount of amplifier that you desire to feed them with and the more the better.
