I had the fortune of being invited to the Stoltzmans' home for dinner last night. Mika, his wife, a terrific marimba player, cooked a wonderful meal. We met through Yoko and Haruki Murakami when they were affiliated with Wellesley College in the spring of 2023. Stoltzman is 82 now, and withMika, he is embarking on a concert tour in Japan and China. We talked about Tashi and Messiaen's "Quartet for the End of Time." He said it was rare to find a piece for a cello, violin, clarinet, and piano. Peter Serkin really wanted to play this piece. I wonder how people out there remember Tashi, Stoltzman, and Messiaen. What an incredible musician Richard still is.

In 1986 I bought a Down Beat magazine by a Tangerine Dream interview, I glad Mr.Stoltzman was the main interview in that month a long Jim Hall.

What kind of charmed life do you live that you get to meet these people?  I am so jealous.  I haven't heard the Stoltzman performance for Quartet for the End of Time, but I have heard his Mozart recordings and he's an absolute master. 

Also, you met Murakami?  That had to be amazing.  I just read my first Murakami this past year - Kafka on the Shore.  It definitely blew me away.

I got to know Haruki Murakami in 1991, when he and his wife came to Princeton. I was teaching modern Japanese literature there. I've learned so much from him about music. If you are into classical music, you'll enjoy his Absolutely on Music.
