Did I read correct that Chrome Ad Blocker is coming to an end or restrictions on extensions?

I do not have an answer to your specific question, but I have been using UBlock Origin for over a year on Chrome, and I love it. It works well, seems non-invasive,  and has some customization available. I would recommend do some of your own research, but it is the one I decided to go with after I researched, and most importantly, I do not regret the decision.

Best of luck,

A ChatGPT summary with sources:

"No, the Chrome ad blocker is not being discontinued. However, the transition from Manifest V2 to Manifest V3, which will be fully implemented by June 2024, will significantly limit the functionality of ad blockers.

Manifest V3 introduces new restrictions and changes that affect how extensions, including ad blockers, operate. For instance, the new manifest imposes limits on the number of filtering rules and restricts certain capabilities that were available under Manifest V2. This means that while ad blockers will still exist, they may not be as effective or comprehensive as they were under the previous manifest version[1][2][3][4].

Google argues that these changes are intended to improve privacy and security by reducing the potential for extensions to misuse their permissions. However, critics and developers of ad blockers have expressed concerns that these limitations will hinder the performance of content-blocking extensions, making them less effective at blocking ads and other unwanted content[1][2][3][4].

So, with Google making its money from ads, which requires compiling a dossier on individual users, any Google product puts user privacy and control as very low priorities. When Google talks about privacy, it is talking about protecting Google's systems from extertnal threat vectors, not protecting Google users from Google.
