To me, under a certain mileage (low) and age (couple of years) I consider it as "pre-owned"; it should have factory warranty and such. Anything beyond that, I consider it used.

So, what do you consider as high mileage on a used car?

My 1977 Jeep Wagoneer had 280,970 miles and I just sold it for $5,600. That's definitely high mileage but I got a very fair price for it.

People in the Subaru Outback forums ask if they should buy Outbacks with almost 200,000 miles and the group says yes, they last forever. Those high mileage Outbacks sell for a lot less than I got for my Jeep.

My theory for cars is to drive them til the wheels fall off. With modern vehicles, 100K is the new 50, where they start to develop some quirks but still function as intended. 200K starts to get some concerns and 300K turns into issues. My truck (well used and definitely abused) is 245K, my Mazda daily commuter is 312K and my wife's jeep is barely broken in at 136K. My consideration of "high" mileage starts at 150 and up from there.

It depends.  250K on a Honda or Toyota is getting high.  I've got about 250K on a '93 Cummins D250 that is very low mileage on the engine (but not the suspension or body).

Things have changed drastically over the years.  Back in the 60s and 70s 60,000 miles was the number that a car's value fell off the cliff.  100,000 was a junker.  Now that's nearly doubled.  Now anything under 100k is low mileage.  And it's not until 200k miles that the value plummets and the car sits forever on the used car listings.  My first car was a twenty year old Chevy with 32,000 miles on it, my dad bought it for me for $250.  Today a 2004 Chevy Impala with 32k miles would go for $6,000 according to NADA.

I agree with the 250K mile mark. I have a 2014 Tacoma with about 120K on it. When I hit 100K, I figured the truck was just breaking in. For some people, the age of a vehicle may matter more than miles due to telecommuting. Since I work from home and only drive a few thousand miles per year, it could take me 20 years to get to 250K.

What I've found that happens, depending on where you live, is things like plastic and rubber begin deteriorating.  If you live in AZ for instance, plastic gets very brittle.  And heating and cooling cycles in northern climates and wreak some havoc on parts like those.

Depends on the make of the car, how the car was driven and how was it maintained. I mean if a truck has 60,000 freeway miles in overdrive then I would consider that average.

I’ve owned several Toyota Landcruiser’s over the last twenty years and 300,000 miles is where I personally consider them high mileage.  Others may disagree as there’s still a solid market for them with that many, and more, miles.

This has greatly changed over the years.  I am old enough to remember all Chrylser vehicles, especially jeep cherokees/grand charokees automatic transmissions were nearly guaranteed to fail just past 100k miles.  Decades ago, when a car/truck would hit 100k miles it was considered a whole sale vahicle.

My Dodge Ram has 275k miles on it and it doesn’t have any leaks or any pending issues. I wouldn’t be surprised to push 400k on the truck without replacing the lower or other major engine components.

It seems like 250k for most gas/diesal cars and trucks.  I don’t know the longevity of hybrids or pure EVs, I don’t have experience with them.

Depends also on how reliant you are on the vehicle.  If it's your only vehicle and you live in the middle of nowhere, the years/miles will be lower.  We live fairly remotely so I sold my 2012 Camry SE at 286k as it was coming up on needing tranny and radiator flushes plus new tires.

Definitely agree, and it's the way it's used, too, and the natural aging of parts. My 2018 Mazda CX-9 Signature has 110,000 miles and is just warming up. My 2006 Aston Martin DB9 Volante has 51,000 miles (about 2,800 miles/year!) and is considered high mileage.
The Aston is very well made, but it's 18 years old and parts start to break down and dry out. I do all my own maintenance, and it's amazing how a lightly-used part changes from year-to-year. And it's not just with "exotic" vehicles: we had a 2007 Toyota Sienna minivan until a month ago that only averaged about 3,000 miles a year over the past four years. Its deterioration also began to rapidly accelerate so we sold it while it could still be useful to someone.

In agreement with most here but will add that it depends on the car and regardless of how it's maintained. Example..... collector, sports cars, exotics , etc. They are on a much lower mileage figure than our daily drivers.

I have 220 thousand miles on my 2005 dodge caravan and still running strong only problem body rotting away.I have 71,000 miles on my 1997 Lincoln MarkIII lac.
I had a customer with a 97 firebird who sold it with 550k and was still running strong when it was sold.

My '05 CLK has around 85K miles on it.  For that age, it is lower mileage in my estimation.

My '14 RDX has around 92K miles in it - still lower mileage for 10 years old today.

My wife's '15 Lexus has 40K miles in it - now that's low mileage to me.

For cars I am looking to buy (will likely replace the RDX in the next 2 years) I will be looking at 3-4 year old cars with under 50K miles.

The most mileage I ever had on a car was a 14 year old Accord that at the time had about 120K miles - so I think I mostly swim in the shallow end of mileage, even though I tend to buy and hold for 8-10 years cars that were already 3-4 years old.
