Young Marble Giants.  Very influential but almost forgotten now.  Allison Statton's soft spoken ethereal vocals belie sometimes haunting terrifying lyrical imagery.

I’m not sure I’d classify either the Cure or the Smiths as synth-pop. But if I squint my eyes and turn my head sideways, I may admit the Sisters of Mercy “Floodland” release is the output of a one man synth-pop band (Patricia didn’t actually play on the album). But I prefer to think of their pre-WEA lineup.
