How do you kill a pair of Bose and make it look natural?

I have been working under the RADAR to replace our crappy "Hifi" that my wife brought with her. She was still under mountain of student loan debt but spent a sizable chunk of her postdoc stipend on a Bose/Sony/Technics "separates". She is so proud of her system, I can't tell her it's crap! I recently replaced a Sony CD changer with Onix XCD 88 and her Technics TT with MMF5/Goldring. Now the CD button on her receiver is sticking!

Without looking I know it's not fixable.

I have been looking at B&K PT3 for around $200.(I have amps) Would JVC F10 be better even in 2 channel only mode?

P.S. How do you kill a pair of Bose monitors and make it look like "natural" death to your audio "muggle" wife?

The easiest way and cheapest way I can think of is open one monitor and disconnect one of the cables. This way you can even sell it after you connect it back.

The Bose thing is a tough one. I'm looking at nine boxes (TT, CD, DAC, blah blah blah) all hooked up (sometimes my wife even notices a new one: busted on that tube buffer X10!), two humungo Dahlquists and a REL subwoofer. I'm from an era where a kneeler to worship the stereo tower would even be appropriate! (just a joke, please take no religious offense anyone)

So, if your wife really likes the sound you could demo some other speakers that don't cross over at 250 Hz and explain why the Bose is bad when she's digging the new sound

Or

Give in to the fact that you've lost this battle. If she's like my wife, she likes the Bose 'cause you almost can't see it. That's why my rig is in my office in the basement!

Bose has AMAZINGLY high resale value on Ebay etc. Post a different post about the bose speakers, so that you exlude your trickery comments, and then direct your wife to the carnage that will ensue, including of course, all of our assertions regarding the poor sound quality as well as the aformentioned resale value. Problem solved, that will be $5

This is a bit too long-term for you but I spent a couple of years investing in brainwashing by dropping all sorts of negative comments about Bose (which I call "Blows"). My wife was once a big Bose fan (based on the brand image and casual listening) and now has become a closet audiophile. She didn't have a Bose system to begin with though.

It was funny.... we were at a friend's place and they proudly pointed to the $2k Bose system that they had just bought. My wife could barely contain a smirk.

Why dont you try and make it like you are treating her. Youve got the amps, cd player, and turntable, done tell her that gear will sound better with new speakers. Take her speaker shopping with all her favorite cds and let her pick a good one out from a nice HiFi shop. You can always audition them and return them if you dont like them.

Did you know that Bose Engineers were who came up with the slogan "Where's the lows Bose"? True!

Whenever possible, drive the Sony reciever into clipping, hopefully the tweeters will fry rather quickly. Once you're safely in possession of new speakers you can pick up some replacement Bose tweeters for (literally) 70 cents a piece and then sell 'em on Ebay

I think each post here needs a caveat of if you are or ever have been married. I am, and reitterate my advice to tell her you dont care for the speakers, but they are still worth selling and dont need to be trashed.

How about feeding them a dose of bad A/C and drive them with inferior electronics. I'm sure it will be a slow death, but death nonetheless.

Otherwise, I propose a double homicide. Shoot each speaker with a different shotgun, and then arrange the crime scene to look like they shot each other. You could put a Celine Dion CD in between them and I'm sure the conclusion by the police with be that instead of hearing bad music through bad speakers they just decided to end it all. Nobody will ever suspect foul play.

You know, if a Celine Dion or a Michael Bolton CD were to get in there, then I think I can get away with blasting the Boses to smitherins.

I agree. You'd be abusing your wife's trust in you.

She's put a lot into that equipment and if you trash it and she finds out... and how will you feel being a sneak like that?

The best outcome is if you can talk to your wife and get her to agree that it's best to sell the stuff. It may take some discussion, and maybe having her come with you to audition new equipment, but you'll be far better off in the long run.

I totally agree that husbands should honor and repect the wishes of their respective wives and so forth. But, you should also be prudent to pick the issues that are worth "discussing" with your spouse. In this case, she already knows that sound can be better. My 2 channel with RM40's or the HT with Polk and Aperions or the 626R that I set her up with in her office are much better than the Bose. She is just sentimentally attatched to the darn things. This is why I think it's much easier if they just went quietly (or loudly) into the speaker hinterland and never came back!
