I have a buddy stationed in Singapore. Would like to send him looking for a CDP, probably Chinese made (but maybe Japanese) and am wondering if anybody can advise:

1. Name brands that he could look for (is Music Hall or Onix the same name they use overseas?)

2. Specific models for a given name brand

3. What about the 120V v. 220? I would rather not do a conversion unless it's supereasy and cost effective.

Any advice?

Music Hall, Sheng ya, Kavent, Usher, Jungson would all be on my short list - the proper voltage might even be available, especially if he is there for a period of time (ie not shopping in 1 or 2 days, but there for a couple of weeks or more).

Perhaps there are other brands, but these are certainly decent - I heard the Usher in Taiwan, and liked it.

What do you mean Esound just got bought out?

I was thinking about buying their 150w integrated amp for about $300 US. Their Cd players look good also

Eastsound CD E-5 is highly recommended , though I haven't heard it. Check cattylink.com. It costs $750 including shipping from HK to USA. Someone on audioasylum said that 110v version is available.

I have Xindak's last model ( the SCD-2) and the sound is the best I've heard for a red book CD player.  Unfortunately, it has difficulty reading certain discs so I can't fully recommend it.  These CD players are known to have this problem and I would be wary of the company (Xindak).  The sound really is good though...

I'd be surprised if he found one that wasn't 220 but make sure the power cord is detachable and replaceable - they have a very different plug.

All these posts are a good start. I'll e-mail him and keep you posted. Definitely don't want a 220 V if I can help it. I just want 117 V plug&play.

OK, so I send the list from A to Xindac to my buddy in Singapore. He goes to the local multistory electronics mall. They tell him that those are all Chinese brands, go to China to get them!

Guess that means I should try Japanese brands? Anybody think buying Japanese overseas is any cheaper than here? Am I looking for the usual, Pioneer, Samsung, JVC, etc. or are there other brands to look for? Some "made in Japan" American or European brands perhaps? Like maybe under the beautiful Linn CD12 exterior is a Samsung chugging just as fast as it can?

Any help appreciated...

I would take a look at Accuphase.  Also note that there is a 'gray market' reseller of Accuphase in USA, audiocubes2.com. Those are the best prices you can get those players in USA. Check if getting them at SG would be any cheaper.

Of course, since Accuphase is a high end alltogether, expect somewhat higher prices compared with Chinese brands. But what you get is a *very* high quality equipment, in all the respects.
