I'm on a shoe string budget for a pair of speakers (about $1000 cad) I'm looking for a good stand alone monitor that i can run with my sonic Impact t-amp. So far the best speaker I've hear and love is the mm da cappo II but it is well out of my price range. I was hoping that some of you know of a similar speaker that less know that would fit the bill. If I have put this in the wrong section I  apologize. or if there is a better area please let me know. :D

JM reynaud Twins MK II or MK III

Very musical and enjoyable.  Sounds like it goes deeper than it should.

I would suggest checking out GR Research's line of AV1.  Incredibly good sound for the money.  It's even more of a good buy if you build them yourself. The AV1's will stand up to anything under $1000.

Is the Sonic Impact T amp really low power? like 10 watts or less?  I can't keep all the new amps straight... but if that's the case, I'd suggest 92db and above for sensitivity.  The GMA Europa likes a little power but can work with lower powered amps... but they sounded a little thinner than with a more powerful amp to me.  I like those speakers, especially if you can find them used around 700...

I wish I had heard the MM De Capo's... That's been a speaker I've wished I could hear for a long time.  But, I can provide no reference to it.

I'm impressed with the X-718 Usher's I'm currently using.  I'm planning to audition some ACI Saphire XL's... but probably not for a while.  I've also heard GR Research's Criterion and Diluceo... also very good stuff... but also all of these need power.... at least 50-100watts, anyway....

You need to just go listen to whatever you can.  Or buy used and resell what you don't prefer.... It's the only way to hear it and find out what will work for you.

Check out "ACI" products. :D  There is a pair of Sapphires on Audiogone.com for sale. You will not be disappointed with the product or company service!

Take a look at the Nola Mini. I've heard it at my favorite dealer and thought it was fantastic. And at $700.00 USD a pair, a bargain.

I would also consider a used pair of Magnepan MG12.

People have been raving about using the Clari-T with single driver speakers, like the Omegas.  So, potentially the SI would work well with them as well (especially if you make use of some of the modifications that are available).  The Super 3Rs go for around US$750, which sneaks under your Can$1000.  The regular Super 3s (without the R) go for US$550, which I guess is around Can$700.  If you're worried about bass (as these only go down to 58Hz), you could probably find a decent sub for Can$300.  I've heard good things about the Rava, which might not be much more than Can$300 (especially if you find it used).

I just got my SI amp in the mail, and have it hooked up to an old pair of Kef Q15 monitors.  They are 6 ohm speakers with 92db sensitivity.  It sounds better than it has any right to.  I'm sure you could find these for not too much money.  I also have Von Schweikert VR-1s at home.  I really like these monitors, and they get real bass too (rated to about 40Hz).  They only produce 89 or 90 db/w/m, though, so may not be sufficiently sensitive for the SI (in fact, VSA says the minimum power for these speakers is 8w - and I think the SI only produces 6w into 8 ohms).  I haven't hooked them up to mine yet.  BUt if you buy second hand (or find B-stock, like I did) you can certainly get the VS-1s in the US$500-$650 range.

hobbitsnot - not sure where you are in Canada, but if you are near Toronto - Audio Oasis is an Omega dealer, that might have some in stock - I guarantee a fun conversation with the owner there too!

Wide-range speakers are great with the tripath stuff.  A few watts is all they need to party and there are many in your price range.  A sub is a good idea, but be aware that you need a sub amp that doesn't tie the line level input grounds together.

I think some of the speakers mentioned here sound great but may overwhelm the SI in the power dept.

Henry,

What's up with the constraint on the subs?  Why is the tying of the grounds an issue for the SI?

You should read this thread too.
This is a thread about speakers for the Clari-T.  Same Tripath TA2024 chip as the SI.  Although this thread is not restricted by price, there are many suggestions in your price range.

WOW!!!!

Thank you all so very much for all the awsome imput!!!! I've been out of town for a few days so i'm gonna try to anwser some questions and now I have a few more....

I live in Edmonton, Alberta Canada.
I have a sub (B&W aws 1000) but I really dont like subs with my 2 channel audio. I want a speaker that is as close to the Reference 3A mm da cappo simply because it's one of the best speakers i've heard at any price. I have no problem buying used as long as it can stand on it's own with out needing a sub. I may down the road get a more powerfull amp but it will need to work with the t-amp for now. I know what im looking for is to put it mildly a bit impossible but after hearing all the suggestions that you all have made I feel more confident than ever i'll find what it is i'm after. And if anyone out there feels they got what i'm looking for and wanna pitch me an offer, by all means I'm all ears!!! you guys ROCK!!! keep the suggestions comming....

Cheers,

Mike Pelley

The Tripath TA2024 chip can't have the negative speaker output terminals tied together.  Most subwoofers having speaker line inputs have the R&L negative inputs tied together and grounded. I have read that this will cause nasty noises and eventually damage.

I think Vinnie posted about this and I've seen it discussed elsewhere on those "lesser" venues.

Edit: In fact I think Vinnie offers a sub out mod on his creations to avoid that issue.  I use a TA 2024 as an amp and have a preamp out for my sub.
