WTL Simplex for use with Mono recording
« on: 14 Dec 2022, 12:09 am »
Hello Everyone

I am thinking of using a Simplex as a second setup for mono recordings. I am looking for a recommendation on a good mono cart that won't break the bank.

Thanks Dave

Hello Dave, I have the same idea as you have.  I have an original well tempered turntable 1990 vintage with the square motor that I would like to use for mono recordings but I am looking for a Well Tempered dealer to set up the WTArm with a mono cartridge.  I recall of a dealer in downstate Illinois, but cannot remember his name.  Hope somebody out there has some information.  Trying to find a WTLab dealer that also has a cartridge you can afford and that also works with the WTArm is not easy.  Good luck with your project, let me know how you progress.

Hi:

I realize this thread has been dormant 18/19 months but do the original posters have a follow up and does anyone have any input?  I’ll be happy to start a new thread as Killian if need be or  if requested.  I realize I’m not offering any ideas at this point but I could.

Thanks from Killian.

Morning,

One might contact their WTL regional distributor https://www.welltemperedlab.net/where-to-buy/ for their nearest dealer.

One person's budget is another's excessively extravagant. Without sharing one's budget & willingness to buy used or only new, useful recommendations are difficult.

FWIW, my preamp has a stereo/reverse/mono/left/right selector knob. What would a mono cartridge provide that switching to the appropriate setting doesn't?

Good evening:

Visiting a WTL dealer might be on my bucket list for the closest one is 10 hours away but thankfully in the same time zone.  Could ping Mike Prada but this seemed like a good group for advice and answers.

Mono analog would be a secondary analog source for me.  Simplex’s cost would be whatever it is.  The issue for me isn’t cartridge cost so much but compatibility with WTL tonearms.  Hope is people will share their successes and just as important their failures about mono cartridges on WTL arms.  Granted, it makes budgetary sense that the cheaper mono cartridges out there would line up with the Simplex.  I am familiar with monos from Denon, Audio Technica, and Hana but not their results when used with the Simplex.

Consensus seems to be mono records that were cut with mono cutting heads do sound different from stereo records in terms of noise level and depth of stage.  That is where my interest lies.  No pretense that I can describe the engineering and not sound like a layman.

Thanks,

Killian
