Modify external dimensions of a AV3S
« on: 15 Apr 2005, 06:50 pm »
Hi, I plan onto doing a AV3S + 2 x AV2RS to complement my 1801F's
shortly.

Now, the only thing that I will like to do is modify sligthly the dimensions of the AV3S, since it will act as a center channel, I will like to make it thinner and wider. The internal volume will be the same.

- What do you think abt that ?

I guess that the dispersion will be affected, but have no idea onto how bad that will be.

Tks

I slight change will have only a marginal effect.

Don't change the dimensions in such a way as to make the box to shallow though. Keep the depth. You can always add more bracing to take up added air space that additional width might add.

No, I planned to mantain the depth of the box while going as thin as the driver allows only leaving 3 or four milimiters of driver recess then enlarging the length to have the same area.

Perhaps as you have suggested, I will fit a aditional bracing.

Now, another thing that has commed to my mind since I will have more horizontal space,  I was planing into spacing the drivers and not having all of them alltogether in the center.

Cosmetically will be better (I plan to have the speakers with no grille), but not very sure if it will be very bad in terms of dispersion.

- What do you think ?

The drivers do not recess. They surface mount. Edge to edge is 6.1"

No, don't do that. That will drastically alter the response and cause a limited horizontal coverage area.

Right now the horizontal coverage area is good to about 25 degrees off axis. After that the woofers begin to cancel each other out do to a time delay from one woofer to the next.

If you spread the woofers apart this cancellation will happen much sooner and limit your coverage area.

Right now the center to center spacing of the woofers is only 9.5". This is pretty good for a side laying MTM with 5.25" woofers.

You can always make the front baffle as wide as you would like but not make the rest of the box that wide.

OK, my box will have the following dimensions:

Sitting on one side as a center HT channel

6.65" Heigh 21.05" wide 10.625" deep.

Drivers centered on the front baffle, with the same aling and spacing than in the standard box.

That will leave me a box with the same volume as the regular one but with only a box just 0.55 higher than the M130 driver.

I guess that all is OK now.

I think that will all be fine.  :D
