WFMU Record Fair...
Back in the 70's a buddy of mine was a fan of Joe Cocker, he would always play his music every time I visited. A real soulfull singer.
Yesterday I stopped by the WFMU record Fair at the Pavilion on 18th Street, the annual fundraiser of the station, I picked up over 17 CDs @ $1. each, some sealed, some opened but all in darn good condition. Most of the Artists I have never heard of, but its a steal at the price. There are almost a hundred record dealers in there, I don't think I have ever seen that amount of vinyl in one place since the 80's. SOme of the LP's are pretty pricey too. I saw many out of print and rare albums. Its like heaven for a vinyl junky.
If you are in NYC, today is the last day of the Fair.
So far I have listenned to:
Greg Osby 'Channel Three', this is his latest I think, a trio format, sax, drums and bass. Jeff 'Tain' Watts has some pretty nice brush work on this disc. Matt Brewer on bass is very good, a young and upcoming bass player. The very first tune is Ornette Coleman's 'Mob Job', and the last tune on the CD is Miss Ann, an Eric Dolphy composition. A highly recommended disc, the recording is very crisp.
Eleanor Cory 'Of mere Being'. A classical composer's work for a variety of group formats, chamber ensemble, chorus and brass quintet, solo piano, duo of piano and viola.
Barbara Streisand 'Greatest Hits Vol.2' ...lol...her songs from the 70's...brings back memories...of the way we were...

Ahh you got to go to that.  Sweet.  do you ever listen to WFMU?

I'm into a bunch of the guests Brian Turner has had on his show.  It's nice because you can listen to the playlist by song on their site.

Oh yeah, I support their effort thru the last decade. Since I moved to NYC from NJ 5years ago, I sometimes have trouble with picking up their signal, so my listenning has been sporadic lately. Its a great station, one of the very few with a freeform format.

Depeche Mode - Playing the Angel

Depeche Mode - Playing the Angel

The first time I listened to this album, I thought I was going to chuck it into the Discard pile.  But after subsequent listenings, I really like it.

I thought DM's two previous releases, Exciter and Ultra, were lackluster.  They should have taken all the good songs from those two albums and released one album.  I had low expectations of Playing the Angel.  I have listened to DM since 1987 and had written them off in light of their last two albums.

This review says it better than I can.  The best way I can describe this album is a cross between Violator and Songs of Faith and Devotion.  I could do without the acid/goth/scratchy noises, though.  My cat leaves the room whenever they come on.

Clifford Brown - The Difinitive Clifford Brown (very good CD).  Good score from the used CD store!
Morcheeba - Parts of the Process (best of) - kind of trippy laid back techno.  Took a chance on it at the used CD store.  I recently discovered Portishead, Zero 7, Massive Attack, etc., and this band is kind've similar.
Pulp - Different Class (while everyone in England seemed to be split over whether Oasis or Blur was the best band, Pulp (IMHO) was putting out the best mid-90's Britpop.
Portishead - Dummy (I like this one a lot)
Massive Attack - Mezzanine (another sleeper)
Bass Outlaws - Illegal Bass - not really music, just bumpin' bass that makes the woofers jump and makes my house shake like an earthquake.  Fun CD!

As it so happens, I went to CD Warehouse this morning and purchased these three disks:

Beck Mutations-  I am a big fan of Sea Change.  A friend said that I would like this one as well.  I listened to it in the car and I did like it.  I will listen to it again tomorrow.

Genesis Duke-  I love this album.  My CD copy is scratched and they had this, newly digitally remastered, in their sale bin for $4.99.  On my way home I listened to this and was all smiles.  Brought me back to Freshman year college when I lived off campus and the 25 minute drive consisted of the first album side and the way back home was the other side.  Back from the day when I would tape my albums for car use.

Coheed and Cambria IV-  I have heard great things about this band so I picked up this new release.  I will listen to it tomorrow in the car.

Vendetta Red - The Sisters of the Red
I have to say I am really digging this album.  I am really not much of a fan of current "emo".  To me Emo happened a decade and a half ago in Portland, OR while Seattle was making the world aware of Grunge.  Bands like Sunny Day Real Estate & Jimmy Eat World had a pretty strong scene going in Oregon and northern California.  Nowadays, emo is another trend out of Long Island mostly with some similarities but quite a few differences.  Well Vendetta Red isn't all a bunch of whining like some of the new stuffs sounds to me, these guys can actually write melodies into their tunes.  Their is still the obvious modern day emo influences in their sound, but some kick backs to the original in my mind as well. The lead singer also has a decent voice, even if it is not super eccentric.  An interesting album to check out if you like emo at all.

Couple other recent acquisitions

The Wrens - Meadowlands
Neutral Milk Hotel -  In the Aeroplane Over the Sea  (NMH)

First, the Wrens.....bla!  Like lukewarm coffee, makes you want to spit it out.  Talk about boring music.  I don't even see this as the same genre as Radiohead let alone how it sounds anything like them.  A big bla by me.

Neutral Milk Hotel is not one that everyone will like, but gets a big thumbs up from me.  Really good writing (has all new music forgotten about melody?) coupled with some very intriguing acoustic work and some large doses of distortion from the electrical instruments.  Many big band instruments interject in the background adding a sense of color not all that often found in modern day indie.  Not particularly up tempo, but not as depressingly slow as Elliot Smith either.

P.S. didn't like Coheed & Cambria all that much, another "emo" band that is just so-so in my book.  Loved Beck's Sea Change and love his new Guero, will have to check out Mutations.

It sounds intriguing . I like some of the other pop/experimental  Elephant 6 bands . Apples In Stereo and Olivia Tremor Control so I might pick this one up . They all do seem to have odd names .

Funny thing, I was watching Death Cab for Cuties on SNL last night and saw the picture of the band that is standard for SNL to do.  I thought to myself that the bass player looked like a dude I went to high school with. I googled them this morning and sure enough, it was Nick Harmer who I sat next to in trig.

I had emailed back and forth a couple times with Nick a few years back when I saw him on classmates.com.  He told me he was in a band and living in Seattle.  He had never mentioned which band.

Plans is a great cd, and DCFC was awesome on SNL last night (although otherwise it was the worst. episode. ever.)

Mutations is an all-time classic, far & away Beck's best. I think you'll like it.
