A few more...with comments :
    Steve Howe/Tony Levin - "Spectrum"...Thought this would be better...a so-so rock/progressive release. Just never gets going... :? [/list:u]
Steve Kimock - "Eudemonic"....Mellow sounding, nicely recorded. Good guitar work...but again...where's the life in the music ? :? [/list:u]
        Iommi w/Glen Hughes - "1996 DEP Sessions"...some rockin' tunes...ok...but I've heard better... :? [/list:u]
Pat Metheny Group - "The Way Up"....best of the bunch :) ...same style as always, good recording...worth buying ! [/list:u]
Can't say the same for the others....but YMMV. [/list:u]

Chris,

I really like a couple of your selections:

Roland Kirk - "Kirk In Copenhagen"

      Ramsey Lewis - "Finest Hour"

Both of these are pretty heavy in my rotation these days (both at home in the big rig and in the office via my iPod).

If you don't already have them, these are also darn good:

      Roland Kirk - "Domino"

Ramsey Lewis Trio - "time flies" and "The In Crowd"

I picked up a copy at K-Mart for $9.99 . I've seen it all over the net for $8.99-$10.99 . Only listened to it once through but it's a rockin' guitars & drums record with a few ballads thrown in , probably their best since the late 70's . I don't know if any of these songs will become classics but they sure do sound good now .

You guys must be youngsters if you are just now discovering Ramsey Lewis "The In Crowd".  This was popular on Verve in the mid 60's when I lived in the N Jersey area.  Another great is the MJQ live at Carnegie Hall.

Picked up the new Ben Taylor (son of James Taylor/Carly Simon) CD today.
At first listen sounds pretty good...mostly acoustic folk rock with very James 'Taylorish' vocals. If you like Jack Johnson, Ben Harper, etc., it's worth a listen.

Hershey, let me know how the Simple Minds CD is.  I've always liked those guys.

I just ordred two more A Perfect Circle CDs and two more Porcupine Tree CDs as I recently discovered that I love their music - progressive rock isn't dead (Dream Theater sucks, I don't care what anyone says - souless primadonna BS).  The new Mars Volta was backordered - they show promise.  I also, for the Spanish enabled, bought Ekhymosis which was Juanes' (Juan Esteban Aristizabel) band before he went solo and swept the Latin Grammies (justifiably so).  Four more to go there.  For those that want to venture into Latin rock, get Fijate Bien or Un Dia Normal by Juanes, but skip the new one which sounds like it was a huge disappointment and sounds like it was written for him.  Maybe one good song on that one.  The rest bite.  But at least translate the lyrics as that is part of what makes the music special.

I really loved Deadwing- in fact, it's probably slightly better as an album than In Absentia.  I also bought the latest Sigur Ros CD a few days ago but haven't had a chance to listen to it yet.

My introduction to Death Cab For Cutie was Transatlanticism, which I just picked up earlier this week.  A very good album, IMO.  I'll have to check into some of their other stuff.

Rob, I just ordered Deadwing based on In Absentia.  What are these other two bands?  Progressive?  Anything to which they can be compared?  Always looking for great new stuff.  I found a site that does nothing but sell world-wide progressive music.

I frankly couldn't even tell you what the hell Sigur Ros is.   Their music mixes classical, new age and just flat out weirdnes.  The vocals are a made up language the singer calls "Hoplandic", and the music is intricate, glacial and hypnotic.  Either they defy catagorization or I just don't know enough catagories!

Death Cab for Cutie would have to be called indie rock, I guess.  They have a few songs with a bit of a college radio/emo sound, but many of their songs remind me a little of Beck (not exactly the sound but the mood of Sea Change).  Maybe someone else could describe them better.

Porcupine Tree is one of my favorites of recent years.  I've only got their last two, and of those one I have just on DVD-A.  The surrounds are very well utilized, and in the case of Deadwing the DVD-A version leaves the CD for dead.

If you like your prog with a harder edge, you might like Magnitude 9.  I think their last couple of CDs are better than Dream Theatre's by a wide margin.
