Very nice info Marbles! While I intend to sell my RM40s since I have moved to a smaller place, I think RM30s would be worthy contender to compare to HT-3s. I personally feel the RM30s are mini RM-Xs (imho).

I am glad we have good choices-esp from amazing manufacturers with excellent customer service!

Cheers,
Kishore

Amen to that!!!!!

On the HT3s?  Do you know what "high-tech sound deadening and absorption materials" does the BH5 replace?  (Quote is from website.)

Thanks!

No,  when I looked inside his cabinets a few months ago, I saw acoustic foam, and wonderful bracing, but did not look for or notice anything else.

Hi,

Has anyone heard a difference when blackhole 5 is installed in a speaker?

My dealer swears by it but it costs $140au per sheet and i need 3 to install in my speaker.

Wow, what humongous speakers do you have that require 3 sheets?

The Sonicraft webpage on Blackhole 5 states that it is 1.375" thick, but "only displaces 0.25 inches of incompressible air".  Well, I'll grant you that air is typcially assumed to be incompressible up to Mach 0.3, but unless your speaker cabinets are air tight, a 1.375" thick sheet should still displace the air by 1.375 inches as far as I can tell.  Does anyone know where they are getting this 0.25 inches of "actual" displacement?

The only explanation that I can think of is that BH5 has a large component of open cell foam structure, such that air permeates it to a surprising degree.  Explanations?

Bingo - most of the volume is foam.

Hi,

Sorry, i require 1.5 sheets per speaker cabinet.

Does anyone have any direct experience with before and after installation of blackhole 5?

I installed it in my little bookshelves, but what kind of experience are you asking for?  Soundwise...I don't think I heard a difference.  Felt satisfying though :P

I have used BH5, WhisperMat and a few other types of dampening material in DIY speakers.

These products take up .125 of volume on each wall applied because of the solid layer of dampening material. The foam does not take up cabinet volume.

BH5 and Whispermat work great to stop cabinet walls from ringing but good bracing works just as well. The real benefit of these products is above 300Hz. If the HT3 midrange and ribbon cabinet is well braced I would not see a need for BH5 because there is not much volume. With sufficent bracing, drivers, and crossover mounting there is probably not much room to stuff BH5 in there.

In my exp. Whispermat works just as well as BH5 and costs much less. It is also available in different formats and foam thickness.

When you add damping material to a box it slows down the air flow in the box and makes the woofer act as if it is in a larger enclosure. This is true with insolation, poly fill, and open cell foam.

While the barrier layer and the damper layer take up air space, the open cell foam counters that. Impedance measurements before and after installing BH-5 shows little to no change in tuning. These means that it does not take up box volume, at least according to the woofer.

Whispermat is cheaper but falls short of the performance of BH-5. The number one, most important function of BH-5 is damping the resonances of the enclosure. This is achieved by the first damping layer that is adhered to the cabinet wall. Whispermat lacks this ability as it has no damping layer. Whispermat only has an isolation layer and foam.

In some applications the barrier layer can be a negative thing if laid in too heavy because the barrier layers can mass load the driver like a little internal passive radiator. So 100% complete covered is not recommended.

I currently have the manufacturer of BH-5 working an a version with a heavier damper and a 1" open cell foam layer with a textured surface.

I'll let you guys know how it tests in a few weeks if you are interested. If I have it produced it will be a little less expensive than BH-5.

Less expensive than bh5 sounds good!  Danny, I still have about 3/4 of the sheet I bought from you  :o  They should sell in smaller quantities...
