Why 4-inch?I would try to have a balance of an adequate size and with decent quality.

I don't know about a 4". But I can tell you, based on your description, you should consider a pair of the current version Blumenstein Orca's. They are 3" Fostex. I have a pair of early version, and fire them up occasionally because their midrange is very good.
