As a rock fan back in the late 60s/early 70s I loved bands like early Chicago and Journey (shortly after Neal Schon and Greg Rolie left Santana to form the band). Both of these bands devolved into what I affectionately refer to as "Kleenex Rock" - sappy pop bands that turned their backs on their roots to sell more albums, and it worked. To me, their music became more than annoying, it became cringe worthy. This is EXACTLY the stuff my wife loves and I honestly can't stand it particularly when she plays it in the car and I can't get away.

I first heard and fell in love with the Proclaimers' "I'll be 500 Miles" while I was attending Nankai university in Tianjin, China. A Brit had taken a  cassette tape along to keep his sanity while he was studying there. The good ole days...dirt cheap Chinese vodka, watermelon seeds, and a hotplate on the floor between the beds to keep the dorm room from freezing in the dead of winter.

This was the first one to come to mind.. a song from a band that didn't exist (the Ohio Express, the 1910 Fruitgum Co. did a later cover).  Recorded with the writer and studio musicians.  "Mary Had a Little Lamb" has more complexity.

While driving last week at one point "Like a Virgin" was the only thing on the radio so I listened to it. Shocking just how bad it is, but it made me remember what pop music was shooting for at that time and why it was so successful. Thank God we survived those days. Back then I programmed a drum machine to play "virgin" for a two girl band and I kinda liked the song.    I remember back then there was some discussion about why she never won a grammy considering her success. But now the answer is obvious.
