Hi,

I’m curious how did this work out for you? I’m not sure if you had a similar issue with your Cherry amp. But my 5-CHerry won’t power on. I’m wondering if it’s just replacing a power supply on my amp as well. I took some pics of the inside of my amp to see if it may be something I can fix but the fuse looks ok, although two of the caps do look a little bulgy? Any suggestions welcome.

Regards,
John

It didn't work out so well!
I selected the cheapest shipping option from connex as I wasn't in a particular hurry and the power supply got lost in the post!

They want me to pay for (or at least share cost of) a replacement.  I am wondering if that might be throwing good money after bad.

In the meantime I discovered the Fosi ZA3 Amp which costs less than the power supply and though not quite as good as the cherry isn't far off it at about one tenth of the price!
I do want to get this power supply sorted out but ideally would like to find a different supplier as I am not very impressed with connex!

If you decide to replace with a power supply from connex, my recommendation would be to select the more expensive courier option for shipping.

This post is for xXNYXx who has DM'd me about the jumper for switching between 120V and 230V on the power supply.

Mine is configured for 230V and the jumper is absent.
See photo below ...

Oh and yes I have the 60V power supply.  Though currently not working!

That’s a bummer about the lost part! I was under the impression that Connex had actually gone out of business. I appreciate the info!

After much thought I ended up selling my 5-Cherry amplifier to xXNYXx as I didn’t have the experience or time to fix it. He actually had a spare power supply and got the amp up and running again in no time at all! I recommend him actually if you might have any issues getting your Cherry amp(s) to work. As I needed a replacement amp soon I picked up a Buckeye NCx500 for my LCRs. I will miss the 5Cherry for how excellent an amp it was and sounded.

Good luck!

I have been a big fan of the Cherry amps for years and still own a Maraschino stereo King. I can only imagine what innovations Tommy might have implemented over the past 5 years since we lost him. I recently purchased a pair of Orchard Audio Starkrimson 25 monos and they sound to me like the Cherry amps taken to the next level - all of the finest qualities of the Cherries but with a bit more heft and deeper bass. I have no affiliation with Orchard, just wanted to share a thought for those looking for what might be considered an evolution of that wonderful Cherry sound.

Another owner that needs repair assistance...

I have a King STM 2 with DAC HS2 stack. Unplugged the DAC and forgot to power down the amp and the XLR connector touched the amp and killed it. Hoping to get some assistance with possibly bringing it back to life.

1. PSU powers on with a blue light
2. Output unit, when connected to the PSU, causes the stack to just click over and over again.
3. DAC works fine

Any ideas on what needs replaced to fix the problem? Would love to hear some ideas.

Thanks in advance!

Grabbed some new FETs on the advise of a couple forum members. However, I'm still looking for someone that can actually perform the work of replacing them. Any recommendations are appreciated! Thanks!

Quick update on my SMPS800RS replacement.  More than 3 months after ordering, one finally arrived!

It is a little different from the one that came with my 2015 ish Marashino Cherry King amp.

Most noticable difference is there is no "on board" EIC connector, instead there are 3 lugs for Live, Neutral, Earth and you need to fit your own EIC connector.
The other related difference is there are no terminals for the on/off switch.
I think I am correct in saying you need to fit the switch in series with presumably either the live or neutral terminal on the EIC connector.
If anyone has an opinion on whether it would be better on the live or neutral terminal, I would be interested to know your thoughts.
My instinct says it shouldn't matter but there may be established "best practice" that I am ignorant of!

Fitting all of this into the original casing will be a challenge.  I have not quite figured out how I am going to do it.
Orignially the board was seated on the left side of the casing.

Currently I am thinking I will move it to the right side, in order to make space for the new EIC connector and associated cabling.
If anyone has already been through this process, I would be interested in your views on the best arrangement.

Once it is all sorted and working, I will update on here what I did.

That's great news! Are you able to use parts from the old power supply to make the new one work for you?

Yes.  I was able to use the old power switch, output socket and wires from both of these.

I finally got it all working today!  Turned out to be more of a mechanical engineering project than electronics project.

The newer SMPS800RS wouldn't fit in the same orientation as the old one as there was no room for the IEC connector.
I had to rotate it through 90 degrees and drill four new mounting holes in the base of the housing.  This meant that the beautiful new blue LED doesn't line up with the window in the original housing which is a bit sad but as the power supplies are hidden from sight in my setup anyway, wasn't too much of a sacrifice and much better that trying to "squash everything in" the other way around.

I fitted the original power switch in series with the neutral terminal on the IEC connector.
I had to create two new connecting cables for earth and live to plug in to the connectors on the PCB and back of the IEC connector.

I did take photos as I went along, so if anyone else needs to do this, let me know and I will post them on here.

Two Fosi A3 amps configured as monoblocs did a good "stand in" job for the 7-8 months the Maraschinos were out of action but it is *so* nice to have them back again and fully operational.   I have been listening non-stop since I got them up and running.  The Fosi's were good but having the Maraschino's back, I recognise they are more resolving and the sense of "air" and soundstage is better with the Maraschino's.  It has been a long and somewhat tortuous journey, but I think it was worth it in the end.
