Painting no-rez
« on: 19 Feb 2022, 12:53 am »
My open baffle subs and NX-tremes are now finished with high gloss white. I am thinking about painting the no rez before putting it on so it is not as big a contrast.

Anyone know if that causes an issue? If not, any recommendation on paint types?

I think the best you could hope for is to mute the grey a little. Turning it white-ish would be near impossible without either affecting the transmissibility of the foam or, worse yet, the solvent in the paint will dissolve it. I would think water base would be your only choice.

Were it me, I'd learn to live with it. The drivers are black, which creates a pretty high contrast...no?

I'd sure experiment on some scraps before I went after the cut pieces. Maybe some fabric spot glued, but my mind's eye says no. Yours may say something else.

Perhaps some white grill cover fabric

I would not put any glue on paint on surfaces due to it becoming reflective versus absorbing the sound. You could wrap the no res squares in the fabric and use the glue on the surface of the MDF that attaches to the inside of the H frame. There may be some experimentation there to get it to work and adhere properly.

Grill cloth is a good idea. I was worried precisely about reflection but was hoping folks would reject it as an issue.

I am building full grills too, but wrapping the no rez itself too could work well.

Thanks!

Strictly an amateur's opinion, but I wouldn't let one drop of paint touch the no-rez. If you're building a full framed grill cloth, what's the need?

The guys that have responded are correct. I would not recommend painting it.
