Suggestions for sci-fi in 4K
« on: 17 Feb 2022, 04:03 pm »
Just undated my A/V system, including a 4K/Blu-Ray player and 65 inch 4K TV.  Not much of a movie fan so have no 4K/Blu-Ray discs but was looking for recommendations along the sci-fi/action genre that would show off the new gear.  Thanks in advance.

Some of my favorites that I often use for sound demonstration:

Dune (2021)
Ready Player One
Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets
Ghostbusters: Afterlife
Oblivion
Bladerunner 2049
Interstellar (the LFE hits the Soundshakers where you literally FEEL as if you're in the rocket)

The 5th Element is always a good watch. Most of my sci-fi collection is older stuff, but a some enjoyable others are: Outlander w/ Jim Caviezel, Cowboys & Aliens w/Harrison Ford & Daniel Craig, the Riddick series with Vin Diesel, and Guardians of the Galaxy.  Not much new stuff peaks my interest. Foundation on AppleTV  :thumb:

They would have been much better off if they had given it a new title and just said it was "inspired by Isaac Asimov's Foundation Trilogy" or something like that. What Apple TV produced completely misses the mark as an adaptation of the Foundation books, even if the usual allowances are made for a screen version of a novel or series of novels. Apple TV did not show the complete contempt that Amazon showed in their abomination Wheel of Time shows, but they also did not seriously attempt to adapt the Foundation novels.

Suggestions:

The Mandalorian (streaming on Disney+)
Serenity (Firefly movie, in 4K) (the Firefly series is not yet in 4K but is worth watching in any case)
Star Wars movies (watching them in chronological order back to back was fun since I had not previously followed all of the plot subtleties)

Thanks for all the suggestions.  I've seen or already had a few on my list.  This will equip me nicely.

Thanks again.

My nephews and I just did a 6 film Spider-Man marathon (Tobey Maguire, Andrew Garfield, Miles Morales) over the weekend.   I hadn't seen Into the Spider-Verse since we watched it in the theater.   And OMG, that opening sequence REALLY worked the sound system and sounded amazing.   That is now my new go-to demo track.

I just picked up the 4K editions of the first two Tom Holland films.   We'll do a Tom Holland marathon once the third film is available for streaming (or when my pre-order 4K disc shows up).

Surprised there has been no mention of Guardians of the Galaxy I & II.

What was total eye candy and also lacking in substance were

Jupiter Ascending

Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets

most of the suggestions are space-oriented sci fi.

The Jurassic movies also are good for showing things off.

And the next-to-newest Jumanji might be considered sci-fi, maybe.

I also strongly suggest watching Alien in 4k!
It was filmed in 1979 but it still shines today. Excellent camera work, ultra sharp pictures and a great movie overall.
Beside this, the notorious Chris Nolan movies come to mind:
Interstellar, Inception and Tenet! All great in 4k and brilliant films.
2001 Space Odyssey has great pictures, but I am not into this movie, so yes for the pictures great.
Both Bladerunners look brilliant and are great, as is Denis Villeneuvs Arrival (and Dune).
Did anybody mention Alfonso Cuarons Gravity?

Looking over the suggestions as excellent as they are, it appears they are a list of good sci-fi movies and nothing specific to 4k.  Many sci-fi movies are visually impressive to help with the suspension of reality, but who wants to watch a bad movie regardless if it's 4k of not?   Pick good movies, 4k will take care of itself.

As mentioned above
Dune (2021)
Blade Runner 2049
Interstellar

And I think all 3 had Hans Zimmer doing the soundtrack, which is very good, and will show off your audio too.
