Consider the VMPS RM1 or VMPS 626R.  Both are considered (more so the 626R) by highly experienced audiophiles to be premium values.  Both can be upgraded like crazy.  The RM1 has depreciated more because it was discontinued at least two years ago.  Enjoy your search.  Sounds like you got more recommendations than you bargained for!

I have still been on the quest to find the sound I'm looking for. I just recently heard the Gallo reference 3's in FL with a Carey Tube Rig...unbelievable imaging and seemingless High End...no Bass :?:
I think it could have been the Cary? I have not heard their sound before but do people find them more focused in their amplifiers with the Midrange?
We did listen to the VS vr2's and the VS vr4's and they both sounded nice but nothing like the first time I auditioned them. Any other Gallo owners out there that can comment. I know that the second voicecoil has to be driven to go down lower?

I bought the Gallos and loved them.  They image incredibly well and disappear like no other.  Driving the second voice coils does help in the bass and they did bass alright in my room.  I do not feel they are a great midrange speaker.  I was running them with a tubed CDP, tubed preamp, and HCA-2 amp, so I'd say I gave them a fair shake in the midrange department.

Then I got a taste of high-efficiency and dumped them immediately.

Basically, I decided my preference is for tonality and dynamics over the "usual suspects" of audiophilia.

I have heard them, but not with the Cary amp.  Imaging was outstanding, but the image was small.  I understand there are stands that correct this.

As far as bass goes, the Gallo stand-alone bass amp is coming out soon.  From what I have read, this takes the bass much lower (mid 20's maybe).  I have dealer that is going to call me as soon as he gets one in.
