Daj, but we get 9' 14awg Volex's for about $8-9/ea.  I've never paid $20 for mine.

Got mine cheap from Carlton-Bates.

~$6 a pop for 2 meter, but that was a year ago.

Yes, the shielded ones....Carlton-Bates.  You have to order quantities of 6 or more iirc, but that is usually not a problem.  Let me know if you make an order and I'll tack a few on your order if you don't mind dealing with shipping to me.

Thanks. Prices are good there. No min buy requirement.

I placed an order a few months back, and believe they have a minimum order of $25.00 or a fee is added.  Tax, along with  shipping was also added to my order.
These are quite a bargain!

I just ordered 3 from Carlton Bates. Price was $8/per.  I ordered 3 and that counted for the $25 minimum. They even used my FedEx a/c number so I get a shipping discount. I'm using stock cords with Quicksilver Mid Monos and figure these are worth a try.

Does the figure of $8 per include tax and shipping? Was this for 17604 (the ~6 footers).

The $8 did not include tax and shipping.  There should only be tax where they have an office, which Texas does.  And, yes, they were the 17604 cords.

I ordered 5 17604's from Carlton Bates last week and they still haven't shipped them. I finally got a manager on the phone today and she said they'll be shipped out tomorrow. I found the same PC's for about the same price at  http://www.newark.com and they claim to have 764 in stock. If anybody's still looking I'd try them.  BTW, I've seen them priced as high as $22.00 for a six foot chord.

June 2008 update. Carleton Bates, Newark, and Stark electronics are out of stock on the 17604 power cords. Mouser shows them in stock at $16.63 each and Allied Electronics shows them in stock at $17.13 each. However, after some detective work, I found them in stock at the best price at Major Edwards Electronic Supply in Pawtucket Rhode Island, and I ordered 4 of them.  Their phone numbers are 401 725 7400 or 800 523 5769. Major Edwards was significantly closer to the old Carlton Bates price.

Are you sure the Volex 17604 sold by Major Edwards is the same as the original PC that gets all the audiophile raves?  I ask because I heard rumor that the "new" Volex 17604 available now are manufactured in China and use inferior wire and connectors compared to the "original" 17604 cords.  Does anyone know the real truth behind this rumor? :dunno:  I would like to know b/c I really liked the original 17604 and it would be good to know if the cords available from Major Edwards are the same as the original.

If all of the blades on the plug on a Volex 17604/5 are brass, rather than if any or all have a nickel plate, they're the old school Volexs so many are enamored of......

Well, here is the scoop. The 2 meter cords from Major Edwards have brass plugs. The 3 meter cords I ordered from Carlton Bates have chromed plugs.

Yep, I just got some Volexes from Major Edwards last week.  They have brass plugs.  However, I may have bought out whatever they had left, which was only 4 cords.  I don't know if what they get back in stock will be the brass or the chrome.

I have 4 3M Volex PCs hanging in my closet; they're a few years old and all were purchased from Carlton.  All 4 have brass-colored male AND female connectors.  There are 2 different types of cable, and the ends have slight variations in labeling.  Only one is labeled 'Made in USA'.

If anyone's interested, I can try to fotograf these differences.

FYI, I searched just about all the electronics wholesalers I could find by googling "Volex 17605". None of them could tell from their computer data if they had old style brass pugs or new style nickel plated. A couple of vendors actually got someone to check their warehouse stock and all they had was the new chineese production with the nickel plated plugs.

So the Volex's as metioned originally in this thread are essentially about gone. I wish I could find a 3 meter brass plug, 17605 cord.

Did I miss a post where somebody actually compared the old and new Volex and decided the older sounded better?

For all I know, the new version could sound just as good or better, correct?
