CD Cabinet Advice Needed

Unfortunately, I don't see anything that will work in my room.  The stuff is either ultra modern (I like the look but it doesn't go with my stuff) or a bit boring.  More importantly, my wife strongly dislikes everything I have shown her.  She's pretty cool and will let me get whatever I want but I would like to get something she doesn't hate...if possible.

Thanks again.

J

How about an antique burl walnut Chippendale cabinet that could double as media cabinet if you add partitions?

Not your typical CD rack, nor would your baby ever open it or tip it!  These are good guys as well.  I got a coffee table and picked it up 1hour north of Portland, Maine on my way back from PEI.  They let me see the warehouse and played chase with my Labereiller up and down the aisles.

There is currently a "sale" on at Boltz until mid April.  After that the prices go UP.

Also, it's easy to make a diy rack out of mdf, or any nice hardwood, and use dowels for the discs to rest on.  Just use the Boltz layout as an example.  The diy option will cost a fraction of the Boltz cost, if you have the ability to make one.

i have one from potterybarn: accordion
it is nicely finished and store a decent amount of media. it is made in china and i think it is way overpriced at $250 (i used a $100 gift certificate to buy mine).
it does get very heavy when full. my 2 year-old can't tip it over, but he loves to open it to find his dvds. no lock is available.

accordion looks interesting
seems like you would have trouble opening up the doors
when full: does it anchor on one of the segments so
you can close it every day or is it meant to be left
zig-zag open when it's full?

Why not commission someone to build one exactly the way you want it.  Then you not only have a special one-of-a-kind piece of furniture but your helping us woodworkers keep food on the table (or helping to fund a new speaker purchase)

hi orthobiz,
it opens and closes very easily when full. only the front two columns need to be slide to the side to gain access everything. however, it needs to be on a smooth floor surface for easy opening. it needs to be tilted slightly to open if it is on carpet. rubber feet are included for floor protection.
the surface can be easily scratched and dented.
overall, a lot seems to compromised for good looks. but after a year of living with it, we are pretty happy with the cabinet and are waiting to buy another one when it goes on sale...

Lots of choices from this vendor and the shipping is free.  I just purchased a rotating rack from these folks.  Great service and good description of product.

I got to thinking.  I have one other solution that isn't quite just for CDs but can hold quite a few.  When I was in North Carolina for a buddies wedding my wife and I went furniture shopping (a lot!).   Pop-up plasma cabinets seemed to be the new thing in entertainment furniture and I got to admit I was a bit taken with some of them.

Here is one example I could find online to demonstrate what I am referring to:

click on the picture and then scroll through the different images to see how it works.  Alternatively, google 'plasma cabinet' and you get a number of alternative examples.

I peaked my nose inside the back of the cabinet to see what it was.  They have motorized mechanism for raising and lowering the plasma in and out of the cabinet and opening and closing the lid.  The front of the cabinet in a typical example had two doors that opened to reveal shelves.  Most of our hi-fi gear isn't going to fit in the limited depth space provided but a lot of CDs or DVDs would.   This way you can store your media and your plasma too while pleasing your wife.

I thought that I should share this info since someone might be interest in such an idea.

Thanks Marbles!  Great idea, please PM me.  Also, did you know that Bontrager is a famous (cult like) former bike builder?  Keith Bontrager sold to Trek but he still designs wheels.  Bikes were my obsession prior to stereo gear...oh and prior to getting fat!

Hey, I was an obsessed mountain bike guy, too! (and have also gained a bunch of weight since my last real ride many years ago...!)  And I loved the Bontrager titanium-rail saddle...didn't look like it would be comfortable, but after riding on one for a while, I couldn't go back to my old Flite...

Hey, me too.  Wait a minute.  I'm still obsessed!   :D

Thanks for the links to the CD racks.  Found just what we were looking for.

Don't buy a cabinet.

Take the money and buy a Squeezebox2 plus TelCanto for SlimServer to run on a wireless PDA.  Rip all your CDs to your PC hard disk in FLAC lossless format.  Though it's certainly a big job initially, random access to all of your music without leaving your listening chair is the ultimate in luxury.
